Well, today I used FilmGuard for the first time. Since we don't have the dry-web media rollers I had to apply it during film inspection using a rag that was soaked in it (as described by someone I can't remember in the thread, "Dumb Q: Film Inspection, How do you do it?"). We'll see now how well the dirt stays off the print. With everything I've heard about it I have high expectations.

As long as you use film-guard, you dont need to clean projectors periodically. You could drag a print over a sand dune and it would be okay and even scratch it with a utility knife, but if you're using film-guard, the projector becomes maintenance free. Just thread and start. Let film-guard do the hard work. If it doesn't seem to be doing the trick...Use more. I've heard from people that it will even "mop the floor" with the addition of a special add-on kit, made possible by our friends at Kelmar. But if you really feel the need to clean every darn-tooting second like Henrietta Longtooth and Mr.Clean, then I suppose it wouldn't hurt it much, just don't overdo it.

We recently started using FilmGuard about two months ago and the amount of scratched and dirty prints has dropped dramatically. Although we would have no scratched prints if some people would apply according to the schedule we made. Anyhow my managers are pleased with the results, and the projectors pretty much maintain themselves. You're best bet would be to clean out the projector thoroughly, and then run the print, that way it will stay clean for a good while.
