I was just curious if anyone else has had problems with prints comming from Deluxe Canada?

Yesterday was the second time in the past 4 months (it happened with Big Momma's House) that we had a print sent to us in the wrong language. Reels 2 and 5 of one of our Charlie's Angels print were in FRENCH!!!

Thank God that that was the first movie that our projectionist put together and he was able to catch the problem. (Unlike last time when we found out that reels were in French during the first show)

On a positive note, we called at 7pm CST and Technicolor was able to have replacement reels delivered to our theatre by midnight so we didn't lose any shows at least.

Just curious because the Technicolor customer service rep acted like this has never happened before. Anyone else had problems like this, or are we just extremely unlucky?

I think you're extremely unlucky. Also, I think this is a fault of the film shipping depot and not the lab. Deluxe Canada generally does a pretty nice job on their prints.

Getting a reel from the wrong version of a print should be an unusual occurance. The labs do a pretty good job of tracking these things, but mistakes can happen. Remember, most print orders number in the thousands, so even a 0.1 percent error rate means a few theatres may get the wrong reel. Hopefully, the language was written on the soundtrack leader (usually along the analog soundtrack area), so the error can be caught during print inspection. If not, the only way to catch this would be a pre-screening (unless you can "read" the squiggly lines or bits ).

Deluxe Toronto prints for both the Canadian and US market, so the possibility of getting a French language reel is probably slightly greater than one of the Hollywood-based labs. Covitec is the other major lab doing release prints in Canada.

I've never personally received a print with the wrong language track, but I did see "Buena Vista Social Club" on its opening weekend; the theatre where I saw it had received a reel 1 without subtitles (and with the original track). Since the film was really about music, anyway, it didn't matter that much, but it was annoying. (To be fair, they announced this problem before the show and offered refunds to those who wanted to wait until the reel was replaced.)
