I just got in a new shutter for a Simplex XL. There was a couple of the fins that act as a cooling fan that were ground off at the factory. I am wondering if this is how they balance them, or should I send it back?

Yes they do grind off the fins, as necessary, to balance the shutter...Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. We have even drilled/tapped and threaded screws in the "fan" area to get the shutters to balance better.

Balance isn't HYPER-critical but you DO have to be pretty well balanced.

My trick is to get a big screwdriver and spin the shutter on it. (Like you do with lawnmower blades) Do it two or three times and see if one side always ends up pointing down.

The way I always did it was if the same end of the shutter ends up pointing down 2 times out of 3, or more then it needs a "touch up". Methods of touching up vary according to situation and severity but basically just use the common sense that God gave you!

You MUST have some sense because you're on THIS website, aren't you!

Well, Randy, it is all theory and conjecture at this point to see if I have any sense at all. After all I am in this business.

"There's no business like SHOW BUSINESS".

The pay may be lousy, but helping thousands of people enjoy themselves at your theatre every week does have its' rewards. I started out at $2 per hour at the drive-in in 1967, but hearing a full lot laughing at the "Love Bug" or crying during "Love Story" made my night.
