Author Topic: Hole size in new reels Bob Minge Film Handler Posts: 43 From: Fergus Falls, MN, USA Registered: Aug 2000 posted 01-26-2001 11:08 PM                        When I put together Sugar and Spice, I noticed the reels were brand new, a different style. I then noticed that the hole to put your "power peg" thru on the reel for breakdown was very small. My Strong table and my Speco table both use the same screw in, screw out peg of the same size. I can interchange them with no problem. But the pegs are larger than the hole in these new reels. I may have to buy a bit to drill out the holes in the plastic reels before I break the film down in a few weeks. You can disassemble them and put the cores on "good" reels to break down, then put them back on the originals if you want. I know, that's a pain in the Glutes. Also, the holes in almost all plastic reels are "adjustable" if you have the right equipment. (Namely, a 1/4 inch drill bit!)  |  IP: Logged Paul G. I wonder where their heads are when they come up with some of the off-the-wall stuff that the projectionist has to modify to make it work. It is nuts!  |  IP: Logged John Pytlak Film God Posts: 9987 From: Rochester, NY 14650-1922 Registered: Jan 2000 posted 01-27-2001 07:10 PM                        The SMPTE does have a standard for shipping reels (SMPTE 192), but no one seems to follow it anymore, usually trying to reduce the unit cost. The split apart reels were invented to cut down on labor costs at the exchange, so film on cores from the labs doesn't have to be wound onto the old style reels. You see,you drill. The next guy (or gal) putting the thing together will love ya for it. If the exchange sees enough of it,maybe they'll think humm...lots of modified reels there must be a problem. Posts: 3061 From: Rockwall TX USA Registered: Sep 1999 posted 01-27-2001 08:40 PM                     That's odd, the last couple times I have had these reels (the New Line/Transfilm reels) they had holes in the proper places, and I am pretty sure they were molded in.
