I was wondering how much tension to apply to the drag head of my kelmar rewind table. I'm afraid of damaging the film. Is there a rule of thumb?

SMPTE Recommended Practice RP 106 specifies "Film Tension in 35-mm Motion-Picture Systems Operating Under 0.9 m/s (180 ft/min)". Film running over sprockets should never exceed 66.7 N (15 lbf), and should normally range between 1.7 N (6 ozf) and 4.4 N (16ozf). In rewind applications, excessive tension may cause the film to wind unevenly or have "spoking". Winding with too little tension produces a loose roll that may tend to cinch. In general, wind with the least tension that still gives an evenly wound "tight" roll.
