In two of our locations, "Lord of the Rings" lost SDDS sync near the end of the film. Anyone else? These locations are in two different states.

Yes, this is a documented problem affecting the SDDS track in reel 9. Replace the reel.

Anyone who has SDDS systems in their theater and is not currently playing the film in SDDS would be very smart if they were to try playing the film in an SDDS house (even if for only one show) to verify whether they have a bad reel or not. Get them changed out right now, for I'll bet a few weeks down the road the lab will be unwilling to exchange it.

This sort of thing is why all film should be pre-screened before exhibiting them to the public. I'm sure the paying LOTR fans were not impressed. There is no excuse for not pre-screening all film.

(By the way, this is a good example of why it is so important to choose an appropriate title when a new post is started. The thread title "Lord of the Rings" may be skipped by some people and doesn't give too much insight as to the topic of the discussion. A more appropriate title would have been "SDDS problem with Lord of the Rings".)

I can think of one valid reason for not prescreening a film.. Like, your promo screenign for Ali is at 7:30 and technicolor doesnt deliver the G** D***** M***** F****** print until 4pm...

Sorry. Had to rant...

Of the two prints I have been to screenings of, the SR-D one played in synch throughout, the DTS one also went out of synch for reel 9. Very odd problem, don't know if this was just the one print or all prints having this problem. Anyone else have trouble with DTS on this film?

I never noticed DTS losing synch (as in lip synch) on "Lord of the Rings" here in Lawton. However, late in the film, the system defaulted to analog at the reel change and briefly a couple more times during that reel. Gives you a bad jolt if you are not used to it happening.

If a reel is out of sync in DTS, call the film distribuator and request a new reel.

Heh, luckily, this print belonged to the competition so no ordering a new reel for me. But thank you for the advice in any case Karen. I was just curious, since somone else had a problem with SDDS on that last reel, if there had been a serious lab issue with that reel or if these were just isolated occurances.
