I'm wondering how folks out there go about cleaning up 35mm reels around the heads and tails. I have an acetate print that has excessive dirt on probably about the last 50 - 75 feet of film on the head and tail of each reel. The majority of each reel is relatively clean however, so it seems a waste to run the entire print through a film cleaner over and over until the ends are clean. I wanted to know if anyone here had any tricks they've used in the past.

Thanks!

Kodak's "Film Notes for Reel People" issue H-50-10 discusses the technique when using a fast-evaporating solvent-based film cleaner:

Others here on Film-Tech have been very pleased with FilmGuard using a similar method, taking care to follow the instructions and not putting too much on the film. Never try to clean a print with a dry cloth --- any abrasive dirt trapped will scratch the print.
