At ShoWest I picked up a catalogue from this company. I had not heard about them. Germany is largely Osram territory. Does anyone have any experience with their lamps?

I hear lots and lots of good things about them, but have never had any direct experience. I am starting a demo of their 3K bulb for a future review though.

I use Superior Quartz lamps and find them excellent.
They are guarnteed for more hours then osram and seem to give a more stable and better light than osram.
The supplier i use in the U.K is Future Projections LTD in London.

www.fproj.com

I would recomend using superior Quartz lamps no problems.

I checked the earkier threads and found that the responses were very positive throughout. Maybe we could use this thread here for an updated picture.

Although it's not a popular size, I've been happy with the 1600-watt xenons from SQ in a pair of Super Lume-X lamphouses. The brightness and quality of the light are excellent, though I don't have any direct comparison to other brands (I mostly deal with 2kw or 3kw Osram and, recently, LTI).

My only issue with SQ is their packaging. Osram bulbs come with nice snap-lock plastic tube things that protect the bulb. LTI xenons come with somewhat flimsier but still pretty good plastic shells which are held together with velcro. SQ bulbs (at least the 1600s) just have a little flexible plastic thing that one is supposed to tie around the bulb and which doesn't appear to offer much protection. Obviously this doesn't matter once the bulb is in its box, but it is an issue when changing bulbs.

I'm using SPQ lamps in service from 2,000 up to 7,000 watts. Service has been excellent. The 4 & 7kW bulbs almost look "overbuilt" compared to those of some other companies. A couple of 4kW bulbs are nearing warranty, and have yet to exhibit any flickering... something I've had some trouble with in recent years.

I am surprised to read about a lot of problems with Osram lamps recently. I never had any problems except for one which exploded in the projector and we used to run them way beyond the recommended hours. But the responses about the SQ lamps have made me very curious.

Michael, I'd be curious to know if the Osrams over in europe are the same as they are over here......
Over the last 6 or 7 years Osram seems to have lost alot of the quality it once had. Some here say its due to Osram having bought the Phillips patents and combined some of those designs into their lamps. I remember when I never had a problem with an Osram, bubt not any more...in fact I pretty much refuse to sell them. There are better alternatives and Superior is one of them, a couple of others are Ushio(Christie), and LTI. I can pretty much say that I have almost 0 failure rate with those brands....Christie in particuluar.

Thanks for the kind statements. [Big Grin]
I'd like to mention a word on the packaging. The vinyl wrap used may seem flimsy, but is actually approved by NASA for protection with our 32,000 watt solar simulation lamps. We have run many explosion tests on these wraps and have proven to be a very safe means of handling the lamp. We actaully thought since it is smaller than the large plastic housings that it would ease in the installation process. If it is a problem could somebody give us a call so we can get a better understanding of the problem it creates upon installation. Some other advantages: less expensive so it keeps the price of the lamp down, and is easier to dispose.
Aslo if there are any other suggestions on how to improve the overall quality of our product please let us know.
Thanks,
Denny

The plastic wrap was also used by Hanovia with there lamps and will basically contain most of the mess in a catastrofic failure
The only concern is with the 1000 and 1600HSC and the older ORC lamphouses. That stiff plastic tube is intended as the removal tool as it provides the torque to thread the lamp in via the pins so one doesn't stress the lamp
It is a good idea to keep one of those tubes around
All the theatres that I service that have used SQP are very happy
