The ATRAC codec has undergone much refinement since its introduction with the MiniDisc in 1992. I'm curious to know how much of this refinement can be relized by the SDDS format. Are the advancements primarily on the encoding end and thus able to benefit SDDS or is it more of a hardware issue? Are there differences between the decoding in the DFP-2000 and DFP-3000?

The ATRAC version used in SDDS is a higher developed "professional" version and it of course uses 8 discrete ATRAC mdules for the 8 channels. I have the specifications of the SDDS ATRAC, but when I moved to the US a few months ago, I left those documents at home. I thought I wouldn`t need them anymore since Sony dropped the format. Sorry!
Sony also doesn`t fully support ATRAC anymore either. They are using more and more other encoding technologies, and had 2 new standards in the making, but I haven`t followed up on that. They planned to introduce a home standard for DVD based on SDDS (I think it was to be called SMDS), but apparently nothing came of that either.

So unlike Sony to drop an audio format. This is not at all like the Elcaset.

Hi,

I don't think that the ATRAC decoding in SDDS units is something special. Take a look at the ICs inside the SDDS unit and do a search at google. In both the 2000 and the 3000 you will find ATRAC 2. Or am I missing something?

Max
