I don't remember seeing any fanfare for the new Reel ID section of the site. Maybe because there's not a lot of movies there yet, but that'll change soon.

Nice job guys!

Wow, that took over a week for anyone to notice! (We had bets going.) It was a bit of a pain to set up (custom script kudos goes to Adam) and will be a weekly chore to maintain, but it should prove invaluable to anyone who gets a used print without leaders or mangled in some way.

Do the bets only include a new topic in FHF? Otherwise itīs been discussed (although briefly) in the chatroom the other day, like wednesday.
Hope that it messes with the winning bet...

Who won the bet, by the way? And great idea!

PS What do you know, my 100th post. Moving forward, upwards! DS

Actually, it got discussed in the chat on Tuesday - either late in the morning, or early in the afternoon.
I know, I was there. [Smile]

Gracia: if I remember correctly, so was I, so you probably got the day right.

Adam: Fine, so who wins the bet? If you were all betting on when you and Brad discussed it the first time you guys sholud win...

Does it get a separate entry in the FAQ for how to contribute and enter information? No problems with copyright (I donīt think there should be, but not every law agrees with me...)?

After posting a request for "Teacher's Pet" on the print info forum, I looked at the reel ID area and saw that the information for Teacher's Pet was there along with the scans. It would be nice if any print info in the reel ID area would also end up on the print info forum as well so a search will turn it up. If I'd looked in Reel ID first, I wouldn't have posted the request (although the trailer lists posted often in the print info. forum are nice).

Since the reel ID area is new (I did notice it the day it turned up and think it's neat!) I figure this issue will rear its head at times. Maybe make a Reel ID post possible only if there is a thread for the movie in the "print info" forum? Redundancy doesn't hurt, as long as the information is consistent between the two areas.

The Reel ID section is only able to be updated by the Administration staff, and that's the way it will remain to guarantee accuracy. Any info posted in the FITA forum could be incorrect, even though we do specifically ask that people not post there unless they have personally handled the print. Regardless, often people are able to post useful things such as aspect ratio and trailers weeks ahead of time in the FITA forum. That's where the FITA forum comes in handy. Once the movie has opened on it's wide break, trailers are no longer an issue and the Reel ID database would be the place to seek info.

This will only include typical mainstream films as it currently stands. If there are a couple of reliable members out there who work at arthouse theaters or play a lot of repertory titles and are willing to go through the extra nuisance of scanning the ID frames, I will certainly take it into account.

re: rep titles

i suppose there still needs to be a rule that the leaders must be uncut when received to guarantee the accuracy of the frames.

maybe it's asking too much, but it might also be helpful to have more than 8 frames' worth, for those titles that will circulate a long time.

Brad and I talked before and we were gonna put the whole reel up (every frame), but decided against it soley due to bandwidth reasons. If more that 8 frames are missing and you can't ID the reels even with the frames here, then request another print. These will be mostly mainstream movies so other prints should be available in most cases.

BTW, I won the bet. The bet was $450 plus a cookie.

Well, I ought to get half since I helped you win it. (You can have the whole cookie though.)

Thank you for a wonderful and needed service.

This week we shipped out a print of "Secondhand Lions" which was a really bad mess. The reels were loaded full except for two. The leaders had no frames of image to identify the reel's content. There were numeroous splices throughout the print. Each of the splices was made with opaque white tape, non removeable, and covering three or more frames from edge to edge. The beginning and ending of the reels on the spools were simply cut off, no tape so they were just snipped mid frame and those were the only way we could re-assemble the film by matching the snipped frames.

Your ID frames page would have been a great help with this film and I am sure it will be invaluable for many others as well.

Keep up the good work.

Just out of curiosity did you actually get studio permission to do this or are you going on the 'They won't care enough to do anything about it' theory?

Not that I care, its a great idea, just curious.

I've been sending letters since summer 2000 when I made the first example page. We are good to go.
