Hi,

Are there any/many Cummings and Wilson (C&W) projectors still in use in Australian Cinemas?

Thanks From,
Henry.

There is a pair of machines at the Theatre Royal, Camperdown, Vic. (Raycophone CP7 configuration - installed new) and another similar pair at Swanpool, Vic. (previously used at The Civic, Rainbow Vic). The others I have seen operating around the east coast are now out of service, although there was a pair of Model B mechanisms (circa 1923) which were still running regularly well into the 1980's at Brunswick.

Phillip, did you mean the Brunswick Liberty C and W plant? If so at least one projector from that plant survives. It leaked a little when I was projectionist there, but otherwise ran well. Westrex 14 arcs on the back. The slide projector was ancient too.

I think it last run in 1987.

Mt Vic Flicks has a pair. I know that they were overhauled in Melbourne a couple of years ago. They are running 6000ft spools.

Yes David. Those were the machines.
I've remembered another pair up in the Blue Mountains at a place called Bundanoon. They were on MagnaCoustian soundheads. We spent the day converting them back to silent speed for "The Man from Kangaroo". Great fun.

The Lake Cinema at Boolaroo still has two working as changeover, with Carbon Arcs....Ahh the good ole days.

Having said that, I always thought the C&W stood for Crap and Worthless.

Here is a picture of a Raycophone CP10 which used a C&W mechanism.

My father has a pair he's restoring (after a nitrate accident...not his) in his garage. I'll grab some pics and post them shortly.

Hi John. Is that a Western Electric soundhead fitted to the C+W pedestal? The projector head looks like a Model "E" of the "Senior" series.

Thanks for the pictures! Iīve never heard of this machine.
Any delivered to the US or Europe?

The lamphouse on the second picture looks very much like a
Zeiss Ikon, but I guess itīs not?

There were a lot of C and Ws in New Zealand used on the Amalgamated Theatres ciruit. I never ran any myself but they seemed to run for ever. A friend has converted one into a portable because the mechanism is quite small.
