Khartoum should look amazing in Ultra Panavision [thumbsup]

Star! also looked fantastic at Bradford this year.

So what's happened to the SOUND OF MUSIC 70mm print. The Egyptian is showing this in 35mm only on Mother's Day. Also, the LACMA had it noted in 70mm as part of their R&H weekend last fall, and a couple of weeks before the weekend, dropped that notation (while keeping it for South Pacific). I saw the recently made print just the year before at the Aero, and it looked in great shape (the physical print, that is. The film itself looked rather dupey).

For myself, I hope to finally catch Playtime as well as Patton and Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines. I just saw LOA last summer at the Aero and 2001 this March at the Egyptian (I'll probably skip Vertigo this time).

BTW, the Castro in SF will be holding another 70mm week (July 1-9) this summer. Titles aren't up on their website yet.

I'm hoping to get down there for Khartoum and Star! myself, assuming a new job and finances will allow for it.

Darn, there's a 70mm print of Playtime on your shores??? The film was originally photographed in 65 but reissue prints here were only 35mm...

Saw the screening of Apocalypse Now at the Egyptian last night, A rather shabby print (heavy red where blacks should be) but it was great to see it in a theater.

"We" do apologize for the rather "red" print of "Apocalypse Now" we had to run. From the edge codes, this print was an "original" print, from 1979, which was, of course, when the Kodak dyes were about the *worst*, in terms of fading characteristics...

Apparently, there were 1 or 2 prints made later, like in 1982 or so, that were on "low fade"-type stock. American Zoetrope (the original producing company) told us they didn't want to circulate their print any more, and we were directed to the University of North Carolina, whose print was, they said, of "unknown" quality.

We asked. We were told it was "red shifted" a bit (which is a rather odd term, for archival prints), but we decided to run it, based on that description, and considering the rarity of seeing it in 70mm. Maybe that decision was not such a great idea, but it's too late now! In terms of the full sound playback, it was fine, even with the split surround. (We played it that way, though the "split" part of it was, to my ears, on the subtle side...)

The other things running in our current 70mm series are much more presentable, so please don't give up!

The print of "Khartoum", (which is a bit of a "wannabe" follow-up to "Lawrence of Arabia") will be presented in the correct 2.76:1 aspect ratio of true Ultra Panavision, as we did a few years ago for "Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World".

It was some fun getting these lenses all set up, so I hope the audience enjoys (and appreciates) the effort!

Does anyone familiar with the Castro and their semi-regular 70mm fests recall which movie ended up being screened in place of "2010"?

thinking i might have gone that night, i checked my notes and found that i did indeed see blue thunder, but not the other feature, whatever it was... presumably something i'd seen before. i probably have the castro calendar from then... somewhere. i'll ask, though, next time i'm there.

edit: i realized i have it in my database. there were 2 screenings of blue thunder that evening. so no other film.
