Well per my last post I lubed the Motiograph AA and all seemed well. After approximately 6 hours of use the projector starting making a screeching noise when you first turn it on. This lasts about 30 seconds and goes away. Any thoughts? I used a synthetic non fiberous grease in the intermittent, sparingly a light grease on the gears and light oil on the sound heads. I can't isolate where this noise is coming from. Help if you can.
Thanks,Ron

If you have a stethoscope, that may help you isolate. Even a screwdriver can be used in a similar fashion...touch it near various parts of the projector and feel for vibrations (you can even do so on rotating parts, like shafts---just be very careful and don't mar any precision surfaces).

I've never used a motiograph, but screeching is usually a bearing of some sort...

what kind of soundhead that this AA is sitting on: a Motiograph Mirrorphonic 7400, Ballantyne, RCA or another brand?.

Screeching sound could be a belt issue here.

The sound head is a Mirrophonic SH 7500 When turning by hand, every thing seems to be moving freely with no noise?

My guess is the barrel shutter bearings: heat bakes out the grease.

BTW: I have drive kits to put Centurys on your old soundhead. Louis

It could be worse, he could be running a drive in with it (no light). The majority of the Kentucky drive ins were Motiographs with REALLY BIG carbon arc lamps. Imagine the shock when a little Century SA with 4000 watts blew it away. Louis

What a minute... wasn't it just YOU who told him in great detail how to take care of it - enabling this "piece of junk" to continue in service?!

Have you had your lithium dosage altered recently? [Roll Eyes]

Tim: Mark alternates between AA2's are-the-greatest and "I can keep any old piece of junk running." Such as Supers, E7's, etc.

I, myself, prefer a system of "preventive destruction." This cleanses the world eventually of "film done wrong." This is bad if you do it to people, but it is OK if you do it to machines, insects, vermin, etc. Louis

As a lover of motiograph AAA machines if they are running they do a good job with the correct lamphouse behind them and can handle very badly damaged prints better than most north american machines can
That said when they wear out so be it everything will eventually

I have not read your last post, but another thing to check would be the bearings for the gears that have a red cap with a single allen screw in the middle. Remove the cap and check to see if the bearing has seized up and is turning on it's inner race. If I remember correctly the bearing is a 5200. It's not uncommon for them to seize up. Motiograph... Is this the best you two "girlie girls" can come up with? I'm still trying to remember the last time Tim actually made a helpful post? The answer to that is easy.... Not since I've been a member on this site!

I have to admit though that servicing all the old Simplex Supers, Phillips DP-70s, and a couple of E-7's, Century C's and SA's sure has provided me with an interesting and rewarding career over the last 33 years. [thumbsup]

Cheers!
Mark
