That has very recently relaced the 70mm DTS time code reader system that was introduced just a few years back... it too was optical but only a single track and hence no fall back. The new RCA system is now in widespread use but perhaps not yet in Austrailia because of patent issues. Apparently Ray Derrick has worked out his own Quadraphintic scheme with a much higher Signal To Noise ratio and wider bandwidth of 12 kmhz(kilomegahurts). I haven't seen any other Aussies on here but there are some damed funny looking people... I hope this clears thing up for you down under...
