Im having a senior moment about any differences other than the gate between a Simplex PR1014 and PR 1030

The PR-1014 is the standard cinema head version that was in production from the last days of the black "XLs" to the end of production.

PR-1020 is the "Studio" version that used a modified straight gate, 3-wing shutter, always had the fire shutter. The straight gate had interleaved pressure pads rather than just upper and lower pads. The PR-1020 also was equipped with the PR3570 upper lens guide as standard equipment to allow lens shift.

The PR-1030 is the same as the PR-1020 but designed for rock-n-roll (forward and reverse). I don't recall if the PR-1020 had them but the PR-1030 had intermittent shoes with elongated tails. The few I heard in operation didn't sound "happy" about the running in reverse part.

Thanks Steve. That is pretty much what II remembered. I couldnt remember if there was a difference in the oiler or intermittent. I need to make a machine that backs up. Im scared to use a MagnaTech just from a maintenance standpoint, plus they are SO heavy. And as Murphy's law would have it I scrapped 2 MTE Norelcos last February thinking I would never need another rock 'n roll machine ever again. I have one Simplex here that I think is a 1030, but it doesnt have a nameplate . Instead It has the front opening under the lens for the film to exit above the sound head. A zillion years ago we built up a couple of XL's with a solenoid and a couple of cams and pins to release the gate pressure in reverse. That is probably what I am going to end up doing here.

I'm pretty sure there is nothing special about oiling in reverse. The pump only worked one way. Somewhere I have a PR-1030 book, I think. I think there is a generation that had the PR-1014, 1020 and 1030 all in the same manual.

[edit] Look in the warehouse here and the last generation of both operator's manual and parts book show the studio stuff. In the parts book, the gates are at the end.
