I believe the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam (if you're a film buff and ever happen to be in Amsterdam, don't skip it) has one of the largest collections of yet existing Biograph/Mutoscope films. It's pretty amazing to see how good the image quality is for such early film recordings.

It's also an early example of the ever ongoing format wars, where usually it's not the best that wins, but the one which has either the best marketing or best economics.

I still don't exactly know how their transport system works. AFAIK it did use sprocket holes, but since Edison had the patent on pre-punched sprocket holes in film, they punched two sprocket holes per frame (left and right) in during recording.

Still, the developed film doesn't seem to have sprocket holes at all and the transport mechanism is seemingly entirely friction based. It begs the question how they ever registered the film correctly. Maybe someone here can explain this?
