The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive has an ambitious exhibition program and is internationally recognized for innovative, scholarly, and culturally diverse programming. Duties: Project film and other media for the PFA public exhibition program, private, press, and preservation screenings. Responsible for the setup and strike for special audio and visual presentations from the booth and house. Perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs for a wide range of projection and sound reproduction equipment. Projection includes variable speed manual changeover 16mm and 35mm film, 8mm, Super8, video, electronic formats, computer output, and 35mm slides. Prepare for exhibitions including determining the proper order of reels, selecting appropriate lenses, correct aspect ratio and/or running speed, and consulting and advising staff regarding potential problems and technical issues related to presentation of individual works. Monitor presentations and adjust equipment to ensure highest quality. Inspect, evaluate, and when necessary repair films, including archival prints; complete detailed condition reports. Periodically train staff and work-study assistants in the use of various types of equipment. Note actual RT, FPS, condition, aspect ratio, intermission placement, etc. in PFA database. Serve as back up for PFA Print Traffic Manager. Keep files related to equipment, supplies, vendors and expenses; maintain equipment manuals.
Required Qualifications: Extensive experience with manual changeover and variable speed projection, as well as maintaining equipment. Extensive understanding of film stocks, types of sound recording and reproduction, color and tone, aspect ratios, etc., throughout the history of cinema, and ability to apply this knowledge to correctly inspect and project films to archival standards. Demonstrated skill in repairing motion picture film. Knowledge of current media technologies and ability to learn new technologies quickly. Strong mechanical aptitude. Acute vision and hearing. Proven reliability and punctuality. Ability to perform well in stressful situations. Must have flexible schedule, including evening, weekend, and daytime availability, occasionally on short notice. Valid California Driver License and safe driving record. Clearance for heavy lifting up to 65 pounds.
Hours: This is a 60% to 75% variable position, depending on program needs.
Salary Range: The monthly full time salary range is $3261.00 to $3493.00, with an excellent benefits package, including three weeks vacation, and benefits for specified domestic partners and family members. Actual salary will reflect the hours worked.
