State Theatre of Traverse City and Bijou by the Bay Projectionist Position Description -
We are looking for an experienced and dedicated projectionist with a true passion for excellent presentation of first-run and classic films. The successful candidate will help oversee film and event presentation at the State Theatre and the Bijou by the Bay, independent art house movie theaters run by Michael Moore in the beautiful northern Michigan community of Traverse City. The State Theatre is owned and operated by the nonprofit Traverse City Film Festival, and the Bijou by the Bay is owned by the City of Traverse City and operated by the Traverse City Film Festival.
The State Theatre and Bijou by the Bay Projectionist has a great love of movies and a deep and abiding commitment to movie theaters and film exhibition. The successful candidate will help us keep the power of 35mm alive while also excelling in and pushing the boundaries of digital presentation.
The State Theatre and Bijou by the Bay projection booths are better described as high-end studios. Operations are complex and require a very special individual with a wide range of skills and a dedication to the highest possible standards in film presentation. And, as the State and Bijou are a full-time movie theaters, much of the work takes place on weekends, nights, and holidays.
Responsibilities:
The Projectionist is responsible for providing State Theatre and Bijou patrons with a flawless cinematic experience by effectively managing the operation, maintenance, and modification of all State Theatre and Bijou equipment. Special events including live music and speaking engagements occur regularly. Public speaking before audiences is required from time to time. The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Technical: Operate 35mm and digital projectors, sound and lighting equipment, Skype, and related equipment. Content creation: Prepare and screen all film trailers, custom promotional bumpers, presentation and other custom slides. Print traffic and revision: Shipping and receiving of projection copies; inspection, preparation and testing of all projection copies. Quality control: Oversee picture and sound quality throughout each show. Special events: Duties as assigned to ensure high-quality presentation of live events, film festivals, and other special theater events. Secondary tasks: From time to time, as volunteer staffing requires, assist with marquee changes, concessions and box office support, line wrangling, and other operational support as needed.
Qualifications:
We are looking for a person who believes in and is engaged in our mission, and is willing collaborate in building and growing the one of the “ten best art houses in the country” (USA Today) and the historic film palace listed as the number one movie theater in the world (Motion Picture Association of America). This person should exhibit exceptional judgment, be well-organized, dedicated, efficient and communicative. She or he should have an understanding of and appreciation for the State Theatre and the TCFF mission. Applicants should have:
Projection experience: A minimum of two years experience as a Projectionist. Computer and software skills: A wide range of skills on both PC and Mac operating systems. Film and sound editing: Understanding of and experience with film, cinematic aspect ratios, and sound editing for the creation of custom content. Ability to communicate electronically: Ability to communicate quickly, clearly and effectively via email with theater management and vendors regarding programs, events and booth maintenance. Maintenance and preventative repair experience: Oversight of regularly scheduled maintenance of all booth equipment, and any necessary repair or upgrades. Troubleshooting ability: Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong, and to initiate troubleshooting steps to work towards a resolution. Ability to work a flexible schedule: weekend, nights and holidays are required.
Physical Requirements:
The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds, including while climbing the stairs to the projection booths. The employee will run movies at both the State Theatre and the Bijou simultaneously -- rapid travel between the theaters is required. Vision requirements are critical to the position and include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. The projectionist must have the ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer). Acute ability to ensure that an image is in focus is crucial. The projectionist must be able to discriminate visual colors (the ability to match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness). Hearing requirements are critical to the position. The projectionist must have the ability to detect or tell the difference between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. The projectionist must be able to identify the location of any sound or speaker issue in the case of error or problem. Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine to exact positions, move quickly from point A to point B to adjust precise controls on complicated and potentially dangerous machinery located several feet apart in the projection booth, and keep the hand and arm steady while moving the arm or while holding the arm and hand in one position.
Reports To:
Theater manager. Works closely with the board of directors, TCFF executive director, house managers, and other projectionists.
Compensation Package:
