I'm used to a "studio monitor speaker" being a smaller, sometimes portable, cabinet with a high quality driver but geared more for close range directed-at-the-listener sound. For instance if you are in a post production edit bay in cramped spaces you won't have room for a big sound system. Something good has to fit in there, but small.

Some of the " studio monitors " have built-in amplifiers.

When you see the term "Studio Monitor" applied to consumer-grade speakers, especially inexpensive ones, it's safe to assume they are probably not very good. Yamaha used to have some "studio monitors" that were actually used in studios AND marketed to consumers. I thought they sounded like CRAP -- very shrill, piercing highs.

David,

The Yamahas, were those the ones with the white woofers?

Real studios monitors are made by M&K, JBL and B&W.

Finally got some photos of my speakers.
They sound good to me but just wanted to know how good they are.
(You can lie to me if bad).

Remember when speakers did not have the foam around the outer edge of the cones?

I've just replaced these foam surrounds in my 1976 Advent speakers for the 5th time! This time, I found a guy to do it that only charged me $30 each.

These Advents still sound good when pumping out that good old pipe organ music!

Arent studio speakers built more sturdy than consumer ones?

Some speakers still have the foam surrounds on them. Butyl is the better way to go, as they don't rot.

Studio reference speakers are usually built so that they are really 'dead'. Basically you can knock on them and they don't sound hollow.

Sam, I received an email from a lurker about your speakers (come on Bryan, sign up!)...

I don't have an account so I thought I'd write you (Sam Hunter's profile
isn't available).

The speaker he pictured is one of those "white van" scam speakers.

There are posts at several home theater forums concerning the " White Van Speakers ". They are mostly known under the brand " Dogg Digital ". They are everywhere in North America and other parts of the world.
