I bought this movie after seeing "Pirates of the Caribbean" since I wanted to see something else with Johnny Depp in it since somehow I'd managed to not see any of his previous movies. This one came out in 1993.

I loved this one. I really loved Sam, the character that Johnny Depp played. Johnny Depp is such an interesting, beautiful guy in this movie, and he did a wonderful job acting. His facial expressions were incredible. Joon's unbalanced behavior made her behavior odd often, and it really made Sam and Joon a good match for each other.

I highly recommend this one for those that like a somewhat offbeat movie. I feel that the movie does a good job making the viewer care for Joon and Sam. The movie is a bit sad and funny at the same time.

Every time Benny got home, I loved the look on his face like "OK, what's going to have happened now?"

In the extra features on the DVD, they showed how they filmed some of Johnny Depp's antics at a slower frame rate so when played back, they'd appear a bit faster.

Next time I'm in a restaurant with breadsticks, I think I'll stick forks in them and try the "dancing feet" routine with them.

Very highly recommended!

Johnny Depp has quite a few great movies.

You would like What's eating Gilbert Grape if you like Benny and Joon. Others that come to mind, Blow and Edward Scissorhands.

I didn't care much for those movies he made around 2000. Sleepy Hollow, From Hell, etc. Just seemed lame to me.

I put this DVD in last night to take a close look at something I noticed when watching this movie for the first time. There was an artifact I first thought was a mixture of film grain and MPEG2 compression artifacts. In the image, it appears that there are "raindrop" or "worm" shaped artifacts that slowly move up or down the image. I decided that this was neither film grain or MPEG2 compression artifacts and am wondering if this is some type of digital watermarking. If so, it is very obvious. It is slightly noticeable from normal viewing distance, and close to the set, it's difficult to not notice it.

The artifact could be described as raindrops running down (or up) glass, or as almost transparent one-inch worms crawling down (or up) the image. I was watching on a 57-inch 16:9 set, which makes any artifacts show up. My first thought when viewing at normal distance was that I was seeing a stationary pattern like used to be sometimes seen when watching films shown on TV, but when i examined it closely I saw it was slowly changing and moving.

Is there a type of digital watermarking that looks like this?

I love this movie and wish this artifact hadn't been there. I think it marred what could have been a beautiful transfer.
