I'm watching the fullscreen version of "Finding Nemo" as I type this (expanded, not cropped), at the beginning of the movie there was a subtitle which read "FINDING NEMO". 3 times during the movie there were subtitles in French, one accomanying a line of dialogue, the other two translating different signs.

This didn't happen the last time I watched this movie. The subtitles are turned off. Does anyone know why this might happen?

Do you happen to have a Denon DVD-900 player (or one with the same electronics in it)? I had one of those and got screwy subtitles popping up occasionally through many movies. It was a well-known problem with that player.

It's a JVC XV-S300.

(Which was priced at $129 at Circuit City, but they knocked it down to $80 because it was the only player on the shelf that could, in theory, do everything that the APEX with the broken remote sensor did (namely, play VCDs and CD-Rs) another thread about that, maybe)

This is the only DVD I've ever had this problem with.

We had the same problem with ours. It did it on Pirates of the Carribean too. Strange, but we thought maybe it was just ours.
