January 19, 2006 DVD viewing in my bedroom 8:15pm or so
I had heard so much about this movie ever since it came out about ten years ago. For nearly a decade, any time this movie came up I got to hear "Aw man, you haven't seen Swinger? You gotta see it. You're so money!" So my girlfriend and I put it in our Netflix que, it came in, and I watched it over the weekend.
You've got Mike (Jon Favreau) who sacrificed a 6 year relationship to move out to LA to pursue a career in acting and stand-up, a move that has yet to pay off. Six months later, he's still not over his ex, but avoids calling her so as to not look foolish. Mike's slick fast-talking buddy Trent (Vince Vaughn), in an effort to help him finally get over his relationship, urges him to hit the town(s) and meet women. Trent is able to meet and pick-up women with ease while Mike stumbles over himself and turns women off. Added to the mix are Rob (Ron Livingston) who likes to play ice hockey video games with Trent while they call each other Bithch and fucker a lot, Sue (Patrick Van Horn) who is named after a Johnny Cash song, and Charles (Alex Desert) who thinks every party is dead anyway.
The movie has its moments here and there, (the calling card and the caravaning between bars and parties were mildly funny) but for the most part, I was just annoyed. "You're so money. You're so money. You're so money and you don't even know it." I mean shut up already. You're so annoying and you'll probably never even know it. The bear and the bunny thing might be funny if I saw it again, but at the time all I could think about is just how dumb those guys were. In one scene, as they are leaving a bar, Sue gets bumped by some homie and an argument over who is or is not a bitch ensues. Sue pulls a gun and they all run back into their car and drive off giving him the finger as they drive away. I don't know about you, but if I had a gun pointed at me, I'd keep my fingers to myself. And somehow, two days later they are friends and playing video games together. Whatever.
I did feel bad for him when he got the number from that one girl (was it Nikki, I can't remember) and it looked as if there was hope for him, only to have him screw it up by calling her ten times in a row. I've been overzealous before and I know how it feels to fuck up what could be a good thing.
SPOILER WARNING
I didn't even start to like the movie until near the end when Mike meets Lorraine (Heather Graham). I thought their dance scene was really good. Made me wish I knew more of that swingin' rockabilly type of music. Also made me wish I knew how to dance like that (or at all). I had that "Oh no" feeling when his ex called but Mike pulls through and decides to start over with Lorraine.
I think that the extra characters got in the way of this movie and that it would have been better off as a short film.
I give it 2 out of 5.
