After watching HOW THE WEST WAS WON in Blu-Ray at my brother's House the other evening, i am thinking about upgrading to a Blu-Ray player sooner than I had planned even though I do not have HD set yet. When I do, what kind of sound playback can I expect with my Denon AVR 3802 receiver? I bought this receiver over five years ago and I love it! I know Blue-ray softwares now come with improved Dolby and DTS tracks and I was told I should hear improvements in sound quality but by how much! How about picture quality on a non HD set.

Your receiver will be fine, and the sound quality may even be noticeably improved over what you are used to hearing via DVD since the bitrates are higher. You just have to tell the Blew-rae player to output via optical (I am assuming that's how you have your receiver hooked to your DVD player) and everything will be fine. Discs with DTSHDMA and Dolby TrueHD will core down into the normal stuff your receiver can recognize, but with a higher bitrate than heard on DVD.
