Today I was at Best Buy and checked out the new 3d tv's (55")that they had. I was not very impressed. Never did I feel that the image was coming out at me. You could see some depth but not very much.

No where near the 3d theater experience. I will keep my $3500 in my pocket for now.

It must be god-awful if it is that much worse than the theater experience. 3D screens in theaters are pretty small and I even thought the Luxor IMAX 3D in Vegas seemed really small. But then again the source could have been piss-poor as well. Monsters vs Aliens was never known for great 3D, was it?

I never saw it in 3d theatrically. But you could tell where they where going for into the audience effect.

Is there anything more sucky than the idea of watching 3D on a television?

I do not care for animated 3-D movies and avoid seeing them but I did see MONSTERS VS ALIENS in 3-D because it was the first to be shown in Digital IMAX at Regal's Dole Cannery 18 in Honolulu. I saw the movie because I was curious to see the difference between 15/70 IMAX and the digital version.. Although did not enjoy the movie at all, the 3-D was fantastic!

John, it can actually be pretty decent. The Sega Master System video game console had some great 3D effects on much smaller TVs back in the late 80's with its LCD shutter glasses. The new TVs use basically the same type of shutter glasses, only wireless and $350 instead of, say $35. Oh how wireless brings up the prices. The glasses of today can probably connect to the internet, too, because everything needs internet connectivity.

But like I said, watching 3D in a movie theater isn't exactly an "immense" experience, either.

I suspect the problems with the Samsung 3D capable TV sets may be partly to blame on their LED back-lighting. The viewing angles with LED-based TV sets are not nearly as good as those that are back lit with cold cathode fluorescent lamps.

The 3D capable plasma TV sets from Panasonic seem to do a bit better.

I have enough money in the bank to buy a 3D capable TV set (thanks in part to my insurance settlement), but I'm still going to wait at least until the end of the year before I buy another TV set 52" or larger. Hopefully in that space of time the electronics companies will work out some of the bugs in their 3D TV sets and movie studios will have a better supply of Blu-ray 3D movies on store shelves.

In the meantime my next "big ticket" purchases will be a new roof and garage door for my home. And I might buy that new L-series macro lens from Canon.

3D is great when the screen is so big that it fills most of one's vision. It's best strength is that "you are there" feeling, mostly experienced with true IMAX 3D. The smaller the image, the less of that immersive feeling, and the more (yes I'll say it) "gimmicky" it becomes.

It's like viewing stereo slides in the viewer. It's very tangible. Compared to those lenticular prints that practically defined 3D photography in the 1980s. They just seem a bit cheesy.

Unless (or until) we get a digital 3D projection system for the home theater, I'd be more interested in 3D VR headsets for the home, the 21st century equivalent of the hand-held stereo viewer. I figure if you must wear some kind of e-gear, wear something that will give you that immersive feeling AND keeps you from seeing how goofy you look! It's a two-fer! [Big Grin]

I saw the Samsung 3D setup at Best Buy over the weekend. I thought it looked pretty awesome. But it's like looking through a window since it doesn't come anywhere close to filling your field of view.
