Is it just me, or does this movie have one of the sparse-est soundtracks you ever heard?

My hunch is the entire dialog track was ADR, since (a) we don't hear much cloth sound, and (b) lip-sync is a little "rubbery."

I'm sure it's all done on purpose, but it still sounds like a pre-mix to me. Wow!

I have screened Russian OV 35mm prints of SOLARIS numerous times, and the film indeed has that dry, post-dubbed style sound. One has to remember that with 1970s optical tracks and theatre sound systems, the constant ground noise level would have served as a kind of ambient background for minimalistic sound design.
If these films are remastered and processed to digital media today, the audio tends to sound more artificial because there is so much "empty space" (don't know how to describe it better).
