I've been thinking (oh God...) and doing some research lately about home media servers that might be configured to behave like cinema servers, and haven't found much so far. Mostly displaying a bunch of GUI like just another monitor for your PC/Mac, etc.
Just as an opening for a possible discussion, here's a partial list of requirements: (add your own...)
1) Handles 1080p (compressed) seamlessly (no pauses for loading in real-time) 2) Handles playlists of videos (surprising lack of capability here) 3) option to output to TV or projector sends *only* programmed content though separate video card, separate screen number. (no silly status messages, option screens and menus, progress bars, etc. etc. etc.) 4) scriptable interface instead of an on-screen GUI - script commands can be called directly, or from a web application (perl modules would be nice...) 5) can be polled by script calls for real-time file information (what are you playing now, what is your current counter, etc) so your web application can also perform other separate duties simultaneously (dim and raise lighting?) based on where you are in the show.
What's been your experience?
