How many screens in the U.S. are currently able to show digital cinema (defined as 2K or more)?
This has been discussed on other threads somewhat, but I still can’t get a clear picture. Today, the AP ran a story on digital cinema, and mentioned that, “About 2,200 U.S. theater screens currently show digital films.” And a couple of months ago, the New Yorker said “about 2,000 screens” were digital.
I’ve asked around and I can’t find anyone who actually works in theatres who agrees with these figures. I suspect the number of screens is much smaller, and that the 2,000+ figure is hype. But I could be wrong.
Does anybody actually know a real number? Even an approximate “real” number? I’m trying to write about this subject and want to be accurate.
I realize that various theatre chains have promised large number of installs by the end of 2007; that’s not what I’m asking. I’m asking, currently, now, today: How many screens in the U.S. can run digital cinema?
Thanks,
