The new SRX-R320 Projection System, LMT-300 Media Block and Theatre Management System Gives European Exhibitors Unprecedented Flexibility

Sony SRX-R320 4K D-Cinema Projector

Sony is unveiling a new 4K digital cinema projection system across Europe that builds on its proven technology in use by exhibitors, while offering new enhancements in performance and functionality.

Sony’s newest system features the SRX-R320 4K SXRD projector and LMT-300 Media Block. It incorporates similar features and design elements of its predecessor – the widely implemented SRX-R220 system. However, the new system measures approximately half the size and weight to give exhibitors more installation options.

“With an ongoing surge in 3D production since we introduced our first 4K cinema projection system 3 years ago, Sony is continually advancing technology to meet the evolving requirements for European exhibitors,” said Oliver Pasch, Head of Digital Cinema, Sony Professional. “This newest version continues that tradition and illustrates why European exhibitors of all sizes are making Sony 4K technology their projection choice. With extremely high resolution, outstanding security, and operational versatility, this new system is ideal for creating an immersive digital cinema experience – in 2D or 3D – on any screen.”

"The new system provides all three levels of image structure as specified by DCI for 2D and 3D projection including level 3 with 4096 x 2160 pixels established using SXRD technology that delivers a high contrast ratio of more than 2000:1 required for cinema projection."It is designed to be compatible with the same lamps and lenses used for the R220 system, which has been widely accepted across Europe after Hollywood Multiplex Operations (HMO) in Romania became the first European cinema to adopt 3D on 4K digital solution.

The SRX-R320 system is FIPS 140-2 compliant and its secure enclosure design allows the LMT-300 server to be seamlessly integrated into the projector’s chassis, providing a high level of security that meets the SPB-2 anti-tamper regulations stipulated by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI). The projector also produces superb images that are compliant to DCI requirements for image parameters such as colour fidelity, white point and contrast.

A choice of six motorised lenses with memory function for both zoom and focus and selectable 4.2 kW, 3.0 kW, and 2.0 kW Xenon projector lamps from a variety of manufacturers allows for screen coverage of up to 20 meters (65 feet) – providing a SMPTE-standard brightness level of 14 ft-L on a wide screen. Using an optional anamorphic lens (LKRL-A001), screen coverage can be extended up to 21.4 meters (70 feet).

Using Sony’s 3D dual lens adaptor, the SRX-R320 projector can deliver crisp 3D images on screens up to 15 meters (50 feet, constant height / side-masked screen) in width at 4.5 ft-L brightness.

The lenses of the SRX-R320 have the capacity to reproduce resolutions higher than 4K, which is necessary to project 4K content exactly at 4K resolution. In addition, these lenses are designed to minimise chromatic aberrations.

The new system offers the optional STM-100 Theatre Management System software suite that allows theatre staff to efficiently manage multiple auditoriums from a central PC connected to a theatre’s LAN. The TMS technology can provide efficient centralised management for cinema complexes and is also prepared to adopt existing installations with SRX-R220 / LMT-200 systems.

The SRX-R320 4K projector and LMT-300 Media Block have been commercially available in Europe since November and have already been installed at several cinemas including CinemaxX AG in Germany and Apollo Cinemas Ltd. in the UK, the latter including three all-digital complexes featuring the STM-100 TMS-software suite and central storage solutions by Sony.

Christie 4k DLP

quote:
Christie, the world leader in digital cinema projection, is pleased to introduce the new Christie Solaria™ series digital cinema projectors, based on Texas Instruments’ (TI) (NYSE: TXN) industry-preferred and proven DLP Cinema® technology. The five new products in the series offer a wide range of resolution and brightness levels for exhibitors who require projection from the smallest to the largest screens. The new product line includes the Christie CP2210, Christie CP2220 and the Christie CP2230 – all available at 2K and 4K-ready; as well as Christie’s premium 4K projectors for screens up to 100 feet: the Christie CP4220 and the Christie CP4230, delivering an unprecedented 30,000 lumens of brightness.

All projectors in the Christie Solaria series utilize Texas Instruments’ next generation electronics which are designed to meet the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) requirements. Each of the five projectors feature a new modular architecture for improved serviceability and ease of maintenance, an optional integrated media block, and incorporate Christie’s Brilliant3D™ technology for the most realistic and brightest 3D presentations. Additionally, due to the ability to deliver higher brightness with lower power lamps, all current and next generation Christie projectors offer up to 25% lower cost of operation than competing technologies.

“The successful implementation of more than 7,000 installations around the world has provided us with a unique wealth of knowledge and experience. We’ve achieved 99.999% reliability and have presented more than 10 million digital screenings; however, when we look beyond the numbers, our most critical learning has come from our exhibitor partners,” said Jack Kline, president and chief operating officer, Christie Digital Systems USA, Inc.

Kline continued, “As we move into the second decade of digital cinema projection, we recognize the need for our exhibitor partners to have an even wider choice of projectors to address the dynamic market landscape. Our current product line will continue to meet both exhibition and studios’ immediate demand for both 2D and 3D presentations –and in 2010 and beyond, our Solaria series will meet our customers expanded needs for choice in brightness, resolution and cost of operation. Based on the knowledge gained from our current worldwide installed base, we estimate that 80% of all screens will be 2K and the balance will be 4K for larger screens.”

The Christie CP2210, Christie CP2220 and the Christie CP2230 will be available in the first half of 2010. The Christie CP4220 and CP4230 will be available in the second half of 2010. Exhibitors interested in learning more about Christie’s full product line are invited to contact their Christie account manager.

First off...DLP is far beyond its 2nd generation equipment...the series 2 you refer to refers to the DCI compliance issue...which Christie is planning on shipping some models this month (I don't have a confirmation yet). Barco is to start shipping their .98" machines in February.

Note, the CP2210, replaces the CP2000-M is a .98" machine and will not be upgradeable to 4K.

That's good news, Steve. Sony had started to make serious inroads around here.

Do you know if there is pricing information already available or we'll have to wait a bit longer?

Whats the improvement here? Are Sony's 3D 4k setups still relegated to 2k resolution on 2D shows, or does this second generation solve that?

However long it takes, 4k DLP will be worth waiting for. Don't go rushing out and installing a bunch of Sonys (I'm looking at you AMC & Regal) just because they were first to market.

(Kind of a side shoot of this topic but pertains to SONY..)

I heard something rather juicy today: SONY will take off $20k off each of their 4k units sold if the cinema owner actually destroys his 35mm equipment that the 4k's are replacing and the cinema has to take picts of the destroyed equipment which is to be sent to SONY for proof to be qualified for the price reduction.

Well that's not a very 'environment friendly' now is it??

If only they had that offer going for SDDS units 10 year ago [Razz]

the console has to be completely dismantled with framework destroyed where the unit can't be reconstructed and the projector literally smashed to an unoperatable condition with a sledge or similar. Then picts taken of these units as proof sent to SONY..

"DANG!" sounds like another "Cash for Clunkers" scheme ....

..and to add to my comment above on the "cash for clunkers" thingey as it did to the used car market:

If SONY pushes this offer out to get cinema owners to rid of their equipment for a deal, this will drive the used equipment price up..

..now, here's the "monkey wrench in the gearwork" that can really be destructive to the gameplan: ..Say, you tag this SONY stuff, bust your machinery up for the deal, then find out that the SONY stuff wasn't it and you want and need to go back to 35mm...guess what, that cinema owner now has to start over with new equipment..

..is he really getting ahead of the game?
