quote: Mike Blakesley Why can't they make one version that "has" everything and let the software in the projector sort it out? Why isn't THAT possible?
Aren't DCPs really "container files" which are really just folders that contain all the files necessary to present a given program or segment of a program? Aren't many of the files inside the DCP container just container files, themselves? Aren't these files tied together by an XML file which gives the computer its instructions on which files to play and when?
If I was making a movie, couldn't I just create all the sound files, video files, subtitle files or whatever other kind of random media files I need then package them all into a DCP container, topping it all off with a correctly formatted XML file that tells the computer what to do in order to play that movie?
So, if I wanted to have a movie that has 2-D scope and 3-D flat version with a soundtrack in Swahili and a subtitle track in French, I should be able to do that, tie all those files together with the proper XML code, package the whole kit and kaboodle up as a DCP then let the computer sort out all the rest.
Right?
So, why do I need a series of multiple files which are, themselves, just a series of multiple files?
Wouldn't that be repetitiously redundant?

It certainly is possible to create a single DCP that contains all of the essence and metadata files for each different version of the feature, and include one CPL for each version. The CPL is what tells the system how to put everything together to play back the title. One DCP can contain multiple CPLs.
There may, however, be some specific reason this isn't done other than they just haven't thought of it.
quote: Jack Ondracek Ummmm... Can they get all that on one hard drive?
This certainly could be an issue. Also of concern is storage space on each screen server. If we're only talking one version of the image files, but multiple audio versions, storage space wouldn't be as much of a concern; the image files take up the most room. But once you start talking about 2D and 3D and 3D6FL, storage space would certainly become a concern. That's three features right there, and many screen servers only hold 3-4 average features. And no, you can't ingest only part of a DCP; it's all or nothing. You must ingest the entire package. So if all three versions were packaged together in a single DCP, you would be forced to ingest the entire DCP even if you only need one version.
Even if storage space was not a concern, you would still need to select the proper CPL to build into your SPL. So imagine if the theater ingested a DCP that cotained six different versions of a particular feature. There would then be six different CPLs for that feature on the TMS or SMS. The operator would still need to select the correct version when building the show. Better to only ingest the content that is actually needed, IMHO, which means seperate DCPs for each version.
EDIT: Also, I don't know a whole lot about the Atmos system, but I thought Atmos tracks were backwards compatible so that they could play on any system, negating the need for dual inventory. Someone please clarify this or correct me if I'm wrong.
