Wings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin).

New prints struck in May 2003.

  • US distributor: MGM
  • Archive prints arrive Reel EZ from Academy Film and Storage
  • FLAT 1.66:1 hard-matted (and specifically stated on the heads)
  • Dolby A, high-magenta track (hmm...)
  • 7 reels
  • laser-subtitles by Cinetyp Hollywood
  • Cues are German-style, rectangle at 12'1, circle at 1'9
  • Heads count down in seconds, but at 25 fps and with no clock.
More notes:
  • ESTAR base print, but the reel bands say ACETATE. Maybe this Academy Film & Storage place bought a whole bunch of reel bands in the 1980s and hasn't run out yet.
  • Most of the film is black-and-white, but the whole film is printed on color stock. Tint on the B&W changes every few scenes, not by the reel. Tint seems too slight to be intentional ...
Print-specific info:
  • Archive print #1 (inventory number 3023506) has been plattered, but is in great shape, with a few minor distractions:
  • Reel 1 which has some scratches on the end. Someone intelligent Filmguarded reel 1.
  • Someone with bad eyesight overscribed the cues on two reels.
  • A lazy (and math-challenged) changeover projectionist labelled "8" [in the gate] at 7'10 on some heads.
Left a note in the can about the heads and cue dots. Not to add more fuel to the changeover vs. platter debate, but I wouldn't be surprised if every reel has overscribed cues by next year.

Print #3014384 shipped from Academy Film and Storage is in poor condition and not suitable for public exhibition. It has cinching at every head and tail and dozens of splices in each reel. It is an older print from 1988 and was a former Kit Parker print (the KPF logo is still on R1). We got this print despite specifically requesting one of the new prints. [Mad]

R1 is very full.
