I saw that the performing arts centre here at Notre Dame is getting this film around Easter and the website says it will be a 35mm print. Are there any decent prints of Ben-Hur in 35mm out there? They also have Lawrence coming in April, but I'm saw that there are some more recent 35mm prints of that one. Thoughts?

Yes, there are good Dolby 35mm prints out there. These are cropped to 2.39 but the film was shot with some cropping in mind.

Robert A. Harris keeps saying on Usenet and in interviews that the 70mm elements for this film are in poor condition.

What about the exit music at the end of the last reel?

In 1970, I ran the Mag/Optical,IB-tech of this film. It was hard matted to retain the 2.77/1, Camera65 imagery.

There was also a 165m release version (2.35/1,mono.eastman) of this film that drifted around.

4K DCP

Delivered in 2 parts

Part One
2hr 21min 43sec (238GB)
Overture is about 6min 30sec
"Intermission" on final shot

Part Two
1hr 20min 25sec (138GB)
Entr'Acte is about 3min 50sec
No Exit Music

Aspect Ratio is 2.76:1 (MGM Camera 65)
In theatres with only 1.85 and 2.39, this will appear letterboxed inside 2.39

We experienced lip-sync issues with the DCP. I removed all delay from our processor (normally 100ms) but sound was still late by about a frame. I'd estimate it is laid-down about 4 frames behind picture, compared to other DCP's that have played fine over the past 27 months.

I started a general discussion thread in the DIGITAL Forum. As usual, don't post here unless you have handled the print/DCP.

UPDATE -- my sync issue went away after rebooting the DSS200 and CP650.

Since there was no Exit Music, I played a CD with the Overture after the final fade.

The word from Dolby is that the black frames during the Overture are the culprit.

I was informed that the black frames were heavily compressed, possibly to save disk space.

This problem came up a year ago with "Ben Hur" and this was their finding.

Thanks, Manny, for providing the overture length. Our DCP of BEN-HUR came wrongly labeled as 2K and without any information on overture and intermission music length.
The AWSM has the original roadshow instruction for presenting BEN-HUR.
