This movie kicked ass! And I'm sure that the rest of you that hated this movie every bit as much as I loved it will be thrilled to know that it's supposed to be the first installment of a trilogy!SPOILERS AHEAD!!! I'll be honest, when I saw the comic book statistics in the beginning, I was thrown off. I almost even went so far as to think it a useless public service message before the actual movie. Why would the Night man be throwing THAT information into a movie? Especially after his recent film the Sixth Sense. And that's why most people will probably hate this movie. They'll be expecting another attempt in the tradition of the sober realm of the supernatural and, with that mind set, feel too superior to absorb what is basically a sober comic book superhero story. And that does sound strange when you think of the storyline in those terms. The movie does, on occasion, even make fun of its own subject material (i.e. Drowning is David's Kryptonite. Or when the son pulls a gun on his dad telling his mom that he'll only shoot his dad once, and the mom affirms her husband's belief in "No shooting friends".) At moments like that, I had to laugh aloud. But the film is stylish in telling a comic book origin story through a dramatic framework. It's certainly different. I actually thought this movie was better than Sixth Sense as far as the body of the two films are concerned, but the ending to Sixth Sense is certainly far better. And James Newton Howard's score to Unbreakable is just awesome. Shyamalan received ten million dollars up front to bring this to the screen, and that fact may enrage most people further, but I really wasn't expecting another Sixth Sense (although like I said, the comic book info was not among my expectations by any means), and I got a kick out of this show all the same. So I'll be interested to see what he does next. I'm just not sure if he'll get as big a paycheck next time what with most of the negative flak this movie's getting hit with. ------------------ The man with the magic hands.
