Hi all

This film recently went to video here in Australia so I assume it has been or soon will be released in the US.

I found this film ok but for reasons which I will outline below, disappointing.

When Yahoo Serious burst onto the Australian film scene some years ago I thought that here was a breath of fresh air. However his recent films have really failed to cover new ground. In many ways his films seem to be becoming what might be called typical Australian comedies.

I find that many Australian comedies have the following characteristics

- exaggerated characters
- lack of genuine feeling at points during the film
- over-colorful costumes
- a tendency to use characters that swear, are ill-mannered, poorly dressed and loudmouths or other stereotypes.
- a cartoon like feel to the films

Films of this ilk include

- Strictly Ballroom
- Muriel's Wedding
- Welcome to Woop Woop

There is a place for such films however I find that there are few Australian comedies that rely more heavily on script, use characters that are more believable, obtain humour out of real-life situations and are generally more appealing to watch. In this regard the English and French seem far more advanced at producing appealing comedies outside the Australian mould.

I think 'The Wogboy' broke the mould a little but Australian comedy film makers still have some way to go.

cheers Peter
