Just saw this tonight with a few other projectionists in our largest (464 seat) SRD auditorium & it sounded great, a lot of action & some good music. Now, I have been a fan of all of director Kevin Smith's films, and I thought Jay & Silent Bob was perfect. Now, it doesn't have the new insight & wit of Clerks, or the style of Chasing Amy, but this one has the power to make sick jokes, swearing, and Hollywood satire all blend together & that's something to be proud of. This seemed to be the only movie of the summer where gay jokes and sex humor got worn out in 30 minutes, it just stayed funny for the entire time! Not only that, but if you've seen any of Smith's other films, you'll get all of the in-jokes & roll over laughing with the cameos by stars from Clerks & Chasing Amy. If anything, I'd call this movie a reworking of used humor. But told through the minds of Jay & Bob, it's too much to pass up. Definitley go see it.

Attendance: Carmike 10, Huntsville, AL, 2001/08/24 19:20, Aufditorium 6 (THX/DD), Scope/Super35I loved this movie. I believe it's the funniest movie I've seen in a long time. Everyone in the audience seemed to love it as well, although I was disappointed by the low turnout (about 30 people). More people stayed through the credits of this movie than any other I've been to. That's a sign that the people there were true fans. Although the original turnout was low, I would not be a bit surprised if this movie didn't continue doing well in coming weeks, hopefully outdoing some of the other movies that had big first weeks and big dropoffs on the second week. I plan to see this one at every theatre in my area that is showing it, and I can't wait for the DVD. There were more long-haired guys in this audience than for any movie I've been to in a while, too! I purposely avoided reading any type of review before seeing this movie so nothing would be "spoiled". I really hope that song that was playing when the normal scrolling credits began is on the soundtrack CD. It was hilarious. People who stayed for the credits loved it! This movie is a winner. It has language (lots of it), but it's hilarious. I played "Jungle Love" by the Time from the "Ice Cream Castles" CD this morning after I got up, since the movie was still on my mind this morning. ------------------ Evans A Criswell Huntsville-Decatur Movie Theatre Information Site

Mostly good, although the orangoutang subplot dragged a bit. Perhaps if I had seen "Any Which Way But Loose" I would have gotten it. It was fun seeing Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamil in a movie together, though not in the same scene.I saw this at the Rodeo Drive-in at Port Orchard, Washington. This movie was shown on a modified 1946 screen, with the bottom blacked out to give it the proper aspect ratio for flat films. Even Though "Jay and Silent Bob" was a scope picture, they didn't letterbox the image but centered it and filled the screen. This is the first time I have knowingly seen a film this way. I talked to the owner afterwards, and he said he had debated which way to show scope movies on the screen, and settled on this way. I guess he gets less complaints this way, but it was still distracting once I realized what was going on.

Frankly, I'd prefer "letterboxing" the full scope image on the old screen, and just tell the audience they may want to park in the front rows. It's all about "caring about composition": http://www.kodak.com/US/en/motion/newsletters/notes/spring2001/pytalk.shtml Although filling the screen is well-intentioned, the audience is not seeing the full image, and the brightness is much less than it could be. ------------------ John P. Evans said "More people stayed for the credits than any other movie i have seen in a while. that shows true fans" (or pretty close) I actually think it may be that fact that the song during the end creidt (Afroman's "Because I got High") has been really popular lately and (at least around here) it has been played non-stop on the radio. But, hopefully for Kevin Smith's sakes, they were die-hards going to see the movie for the third time. Plus there is a semi-funny (and pointless) scene at the end of the credit with Alanis Morisette reprising her roll as God from Dogma...Anyway, as far as the film goes, i thought it kicked some serious ass, and it was just as funny as all of the other movies Smith has done. I probably couldn't choose a favorite movie of his, but this one was definately not any worse than Mallrats, Chasing Amy or Clerks (not to say they are bad...) Also, for anyone who likes a variety of different music styles or all the great one liners from the film, check out the JASBSB soundtrack. With 27 tracks alternating from music to dialog from the movie it is pretty damn good. (Hey, it also comes with a $5 off coupon to see the movie, not that it would matter to most people who use these boards... )

I couldn't wait to check out Screenit's profanity count of this movie. Of course, this isn't the first movie they lost count of "F" words.PROFANITY Due to the rapid-fire delivery of dialogue, the following should be considered a minimum (and some of what occurs is also seen as written words). At least 227 "f" words (25 used with "mother," 12 used sexually as are the terms "laid" and "boning"), 75 "s" words, 19 slang terms using male genitals ("d*ck," "c*ck" and "trouser snake"), 3 slang terms using female genitals ("p*ssy"), 3 slang terms for breasts (variations of "t*t" and "jugs"), 34 asses (2 used with "hole"), 13 hells, 7 damns, 4 S.O.B.s, 4 uses of "Oh my God," 3 of "Jesus" and 1 use each of "G-damn," "My God" and "Oh God" as exclamations. Some of the "f" words are heard coming from toddlers (a joke about where the main characters learned how to cuss).

The worst movie Kevin Smith has made yet -- and I've seen all 5.Jay and Silent Bob are good for a laugh as bit characters on the fringe of the action. Headliners in their own movie? Wore out pretty fast. Unless you're familiar with the Miramax library you won't get some of the bits. The chicks in the van? Sounds to me like Switchblade Sisters. Shannon Doherty and Eliza Dushku? Telegraphs the Scream series. Kevin Smith movies from best to worst: Mallrats, Clerks, Dogma, Chasing Amy, Jay & Silent Bob. JC: Don't get started on the F words -- we don't need a Michael Medved wannabe on this forum.
