WE wanted to add our take on the 70mm presentation of "2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY" which we are playing for the Christmas Holidays thru Jan.2, 2002 at GRAUMAN'S EGYPTIAN THEATRE in HOLLYWOOD CALIFORNIA!
The picture qualiity is absolutely STUNNING !! Our customers are raving about it and saying things like "Eat your heart out DIGITAL CINEMA! You'll never get a picture to compare with 70mm !" and "I never have seen a 70mm film before and I am shocked at the astounding quality of the picture. Also the sound does not have the sharp edge that most digital tracks have."
Another paying customer commented " What's the big deal about digital projection? 70mm gave us the best picture EVER years ago!"
Anyone interested in seeing this great classic in the BEST POSSIBLE FORMAT of 70mm should make your way to the Egyptian Theatre by Jan. 2. It would be worth the effort.
We are running some more 70mm films in January. "SPARTICUS" "STARMAN"
& "BARAKA" in late March
We, the projectionists at the Egyptian have greatly enjoyed running the performances of "2001" and hearing the comments of the patrons (some of them tourists). We would appreciate hearing from you if you have something to add. Thanks - Ned, Paul Rayton, Sidi & Jesse

Thanks, Ned. Just exchanged voice mails with Paul Rayton, who's trying to get every possible bit of quality on the screen. Knowing Paul and the crew at the Egyptian, seeing a 70mm print of "2001" there is an event not to be missed. "Film Done Right" to the supreme degree.

I have had the pleasure of running it twice in 70mm. Once in an outdoor showing in Chicagos Lincoln Park. This was run on a (very fittingly) 70 foot wide screen! We also ran "Days Of Heaven" as well in 70mm. "Cinema Borealis" photos are here in the picture pages.

The second run was a special showing at the Virginia Theater in Campaign, Ill. for a U of I computer fest and to celebrate Hals 25th(I think) B'day. We revived the neglected ex-Kerasoates Norelco DP-70 for this showing and brought in portable sound gear. Roger Ebert was there as was Gary Lockwood who starred in the film. The house was sold out(1200 seats) and there was a Q and A session after words by Ebert and Gary Lockwood. At the finish the audience applauded and Ebert praised the 70mm image quality. This was the first time Ebert had seen it in 70mm since it was first released. BTW: The Virginia now sports a pair of DP-70's as well as a full Dolby sound system. Once a year Roger Ebert holds his Ebertfest there.

I just watched this again last night (VHS)because of the scene cuts mentioned on another site, they were very obvious after viewing the video ,running time showing was 133min ,last time I saw this in 70mm was a few years ago at the Regent Auckland (Not a true 70mm screen, cropped top & Bottom) but filled the cinema for each screening ,sadly there are No 70mm cinemas in Auckland ,although the CIVIC does have 35/70 Philips and a huge screen (still not 70mm Aspect though) so still not able to see films in true 70mm, at one time we had 3 70mm theatres, the "Cinerama" the "Plaza" our first Todd-AO and famous for "Sound of Music"(ran for 2 years)and the "Embassy" saw "West Side Story" there.

As I mentioned on a (much) earlier thread, I ran this in 70MM this year...actually, last year!

In 2001, that is. It's one of the things I reflected upon during the dawn of 2002. It was a terrific experience, and one performance of it received positive feedback from the audience about the presentation quality. It's very rare that audiences single out good presentation, but it's good to see that they noticed.

I'm sure that the people who liked what they saw would gladly patronise 70MM presentations in the future if they heard about them!
