Just saw this film at the TOWER in salt lake city, utah.

First it had some serious damage to the film, bad emulsion scratches and base scratches, but the sound was decent.

This is a German film about a woman named Lola and her boyfriend named Manni, and they must get 100,000 (german monetary units) to a drug dealer within 20 minutes or he will be killed.

This film plays out in real time, and is played in three different ways. Each of the three ways, played one after the other, has different cause and effect happenings that effect the overall outcome. The first two are tragic, and the last rather comical.

As with all foriegn films, it is different. They use a Euro Industrial techno pop score throughout the entire film, changing in intensity and pace as the action changes. The action never really lets up, and each time we see a new way it could go, we see things we never saw before.

There are also times when Lola comes across people in each instance, and each time we take a quick flash forward into that persons life, seeing how they are personally effected by the occurance.

And with each of the three looks at it, we see the last seven seconds watching both Lola, Manni, and the very top of a clock, all on the screen simultaniously as the next potential ending comes up.

The intire film feels like the fugitive meets MTV. It is very stylish, fast, and even romantic, tragic, and fierce. Be prepared for an attack on your senses, because you will be immersed in it very quickly.

My personal feelings on the film are as such. I loved this film. It is one of the best I have ever seen in my entire life. I more than highly recommend this feature, I order all to seek this film out and watch it NOW. It is well worth the time and the effort, the reward is great. I do not know if they are going to show it again next week, but if so I am there. With the sound, I think it works better in a large auditorium where it feels much more like a concert or dance hall. It seems to add to the experience. So if you rent it, turn it up LOUD.

Beware the English dubbed version option on DVD. They must have figured the only real market for a dub was for American broadcast TV, so they cleaned up the langauge--the only reason it's rated R.

This has to be one of my favorite films of the last few years. I even bought the soundtrack, and I do not buy CDs.

If you liked this film be sure to check out the Princess and the Warrior. I think it came out on video quite recently. It is the latest (US release) by Tom Tykwer, the director of Run Lola Run. It is an amazing film!

Tykwer is an amazing talent. He could have just copied the freshness of RUN LOLA RUN, but instead showed a different directorial style with THE PRINCESS AND THE WARRIOR. Both are fascinating films that work from repeated viewings.

Beware of the scratched opening titles, all production runs have this. some of the camera negatives were also damaged, some of them had a scratch on the left side of the image. I have compared several prints and they all have the same damage.

The base side scratches are on all the prints, and the DVD release as well. Taking a stabbing guess, I would have to say that the original negatives are probably shot to hell and irrepairable worse than what is bieng used to make release prints.

Base side scratches on a printing original can usually be eliminated by wet gate printing:

I think the scratched opening titles were meant to be there.

My stepdaughter sent me this film on VHS. I liked it and thought it was rather Twilight Zone-ish. The one part I didn't get was the screaming thing. I'm not to sure why that was in there.
