A short and sweet tale of three girls fight against the Australian authoritys to get back home. Based on a True Story.
After escaping from the home they have being sent to because they are Half-Caste (the authorty's wanted to stop half-caste's breading with balck people and make them bread with white only, the school they were sent to taught them how the read/write and become servents)

Sounds like a depressing film doesn't it! It ain't!
The true story is engaging and make you realise this went on until 1970. The 3 child actors in the film play there caracters with great confidence and hold the film together well.
The film (Scope) looks like the colour has being altered and i am told is was to stop the sky looking so blue and the sand so yellow, and it adds to the feel of the film which is set in the 1930's. but also seems over-exposed in parts.
The score composed by Peter Gabriel is fantastic and keeps the mood of the film on the verge of sadness and triumph.
Overall a enjoyable film and I recomend it.

I didn't mind this film, THE TRACKER was much better though! David Gulpilil actually plays the tracker in both films, but very diffrently!

Rabbit proof fence had a long run in Australia, but wasn't a big box office success but it ran for about three months at our cinema.
I'm very happy that this film is being appreciated overseas.

Yep the film is doing really well at 5 shows a day, just dropped to 4 this week, the night shows almost sell out everynight.

Saw this last night. The images were intriguing--except for the sort-of done-to-death image of a guardian bird flying around over two of the little girls as they lay in the desert. Perhaps it just reminds me a bit too much of some of the Indian-Western movie cliches.

The sound mix is quite nice as well, though we sat in front of a couple who apparently thought they were in their living room and chatted through much of the film. The surround effects as well as the use of sound as a disorienting device to simulate what it must feel like being forcibly abducted from your home worked very well.

I thought the story and performances by the three aborigine leads as well as the tracker made the film--all respect to Kenneth Brannagh.

Made me want to visit Australia--an aspiration I've carried since I saw "Breaker Morant."

Dear Brad.
RE "THE TRACKER",
As you would know, the film premiered here in Adelaide, this was at "Her Majesty`s Theatre" in Grote St. It is a live theatre venue and not at all suitable for films.
Not to be deterred, our state pollies paid several hundreds of thousands of tax payers money for state of the art projection and sound equipment to be installed, never mind the fact there were real proper cinemas nearby or in Adelaide!!!
The film did a short season only and then went on commercial release, the plant would only have seen about 50 hrs use.
It has since been idle from that time until now except for a screening of "Kid Stakes" accompanied by our symphony orchestra.
Naturally this waste of tax payers money was well reported in the Press and the local cinema people were not impressed as you would appreciate.
Regards. John Spooner, Adelaide.
