No, ParaNorman is in scope.
Just that new wave of operations are coming abroad and taking hold within a good number of circuits: to turn off masking motors and run scope features with the image presented in the "Band-aid" (pillarbox) mode, to prevent maintenance issues with the curtains and motors.
This all comes from the big screen TV's that we have now: Since, with a lot of broadcast and in-home media presentations, most of the content is presented in the "pillarboxed" mode with the black bars above and below the image. Thus, the idea is: if the public are used to seeing films like this on TV, we can do the same on the movie screen. Also, with digital, the image can be more centered on the curved screen and reduce the keystoning, but the image has to be slightly pincushioned in on the corners when the image is centered to the screen.
Sadly, I haven't heard one complaint from the public of why the 'pillarboxed' presentation, instead of a full masked presentation.
This is prob due to the preshows that have to use full screen for their presentations and going from preshow to scope feature is taking a toll on the masking motors.
REG is doing the same "Band-aid" procedure.
