The Homesman is an odd story, but the acting and cinematography are excellent. Hilary Swank plays a tough woman who's managed to homestead all by herself, no husband or family, though she's pining for both. The role is completely unglamorous, a very controlled character, and Swank does a good job.

Tommy Lee Jones should be in the running for best actor in the part he wrote for himself: a drifter, a thief and worse.

The cinematography helps give the viewer an idea of how lonely it must have been as a settler on the Great Plains, and it's easy to see why plenty of them must have gone at least a little crazy.

I don't imagine the movie will make any money, or even a return on its investment, but it does have some good things going for it and held my attention.
