CINEMA: Cinemark Movies 12, Ames, IA
AUDITORIUM: 9
PRESENTATION: Cinemark Recline-o-Vision Digital in a Slope Auditorium with...holy crap, are those new surround speakers?
PRESENTATION PROBLEMS: The absurdly long trailer package, which could have been titled "The Worst Releases Of The Year Coming Soon Compilation For God's Sake Get A Life"
RATING: Two and one half stars (out of four)

The interior remodel is finished with Cinemark's old pink, green, and orange gone. It's all purple and black now and actually looks really nice. They replaced the auditorium doors with their newer ones with the long windows and newer style auditorium signage. I guess they also replaced some equipment? Those are new surround speakers. The sound was better, more full range, than it used to be. Not up to Warren or Cinetopia standards, but not lacking in low end either.

It's hilarious that they bother promoting the Cinemark Movie Club in this building, seeing as how that free 2D ticket a month for the $8.99 membership is worth less than the membership, since the highest priced 2D evening show here is $8.00. Take THAT, MoviePass!

THE PLOT: Game Night gets taken up a notch. Wackiness ensues.

This is really funny at some points and outright cringe-worthy at others. There are plot holes aplenty and one too many twists, but this is playing to the Lite FM crowd, which pretty much thinks two and one half star movies are the greatest thing ever, so it's playing to its audience.

I thought it was just ok but the auditorium was just roaring with laughter last night and I had several people tell me that it's the funniest movie that they've seen in a long time.

So what do I know...

I guess it has an audience.

When Cinemark converts a theater from regular seating to Recliner, the sound system in said auditorium also gets an upgrade. Probably the Peavey speakers were all replaced with JBL. I am assuming they had Peavey.

We liked it a lot, it wasn't exactly cerebral but it was a fun ride. I loved the fight scene near the beginning, and the chase scene was great fun too.

I thought Rachel McAdams and Jason Bateman had good chemistry. The sequence during the end credits showing how the cop character had planned the whole thing was pretty cool and the very last scene after the credits (which zero people stayed to see, here) was a hoot.

We did have one older couple walk out right after the "remove the bullet" scene. Probably got too preposterous for them, or else they didn't like the language.

Bottom line, it was an entertaining movie but it did poor business, so.... no wonder they keep making sequels, reboots and superhero movies.

3.5 out of 5 for us. They could have edited out the heartfelt conversations held elsewhere in the house during the fight-club scenes and it would have been a 4.
