CINEMA: Regal Warren East, Wichita, KS
AUDITORIUM: 11
PRESENTATION: Regal Roller Coaster Vision in a standard stadium seating auditorium
PRESENTATION PROBLEMS: None [Cool]
RATING: Three stars (out of four)

THE PLOT: Simon has a BIG SECRET! Wackiness ensues.

There's a sequence in this movie where the question "Why is heterosexual the default?" is asked. We see several kids coming out to their parents and friends as being heterosexual, with basically the same horrific responses gay kids often get...or are worried they'll get. I just don't understand why there's even a need to officially "come out" in this day and age. Why can't kids show up at home and introduce their same-sex partner without making a big deal out of it? "Mom, Dad, this is my boyfriend Studebaker," and have the big reaction be wondering why somebody would name their kid Studebaker.

But I don't have kids and am long past the age of remembering the nuances of teen angst, so what do I know. Greg Berlanti, the guy behind the Arroverse shows and Riverdale on the CW, is behind this, and clearly has a lot of knowledge on the subject. The audience laughed a lot and they tied it up all nice, though I almost docked this review a half star due to the sappy Charly-esque Ferris Wheel ending. Oh well. At least they didn't give one of the characters cancer and kill them off.

Yes it's a cliche rom-com, but it plays perfectly to its audience.

I thought it was a charming movie, but I thought Tony Hale's performance as principal Mr. Worth was cringe inducing - he was the one complaint I had with the movie. The ending though, literally every teenage girl in the audience let out a collective 'awwww' - it was too funny.
