Reported last week by Variety:

quote:
In an unusual move, Miramax plans to re-release its underperforming "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" Aug. 1. Distrib said it will try a new approach in marketing the quirky Chuck Barris biopic, with the campaign also serving to hype pic's mid-September bow on homevid.

Helmed by George Clooney and starring Sam Rockwell, "Confessions" rung up less than $16 million after unspooling in January. Underwhelming cume is even padded a bit, as it included substantial coin from sneak previews of "Chicago" that were added to "Confessions' " grosses in many markets.

Don't jump on me for criticizing this dumbass idea. If this half-fast studio had any brains Dangerous Mind would be out on video in late May-early June. Then again Miramax opened the movie on 12/31 -- the last possible day to start an "Oscar Bait" run.

Variety also said the studio is looking at 1,000+ theaters for this re-release. That means it goes up against American Wedding (2nd sequel to American Pie) and Gigli (w/J.Lo) -- both opening that day. Not to mention Tomb Raider 2, Spy Kids 3-D, Bad Boys II and Pirates of the Caribbean.

I can't speak for August, but right now I have more movies I would like to play than I have room to play them in. Miramax has a habit of being heavy handed when they want you to do something. I would hate to have Miramax insist we play this film. Get over it, move on!

Thankfully, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" was a commercial release. And I didn't think it was any good.

Although I enjoyed the film, it doesn't have much widespread commercial appeal, and a re-release is probably not going to do anything. Miramax: Get out the DVD as quickly as possible, hype the hell out of it, and hope for the best.

A film I WOULD like to see re-released is "Star Trek: Nemesis". ST:N was buried at the box office in December. But it probably won't happen. (I haven't checked on the video release date.) "Treasure Planet" might be worth another try too.

Miramax has a habit of trying to wring a few extra dollars out of almost everything. Anyone remember the re-issue of the first Spy Kids in August a couple of years ago (just before the video release)with 4 extra minutes of footage?

It seems that just everytime Miramax comes up with one of these ideas for whatever picture it was just about to become available to me as a second run theatre. As a result they postpone the second run release. Often I then do not play the picture. Just one of the many reasons I prefer not to do business with Miramax.

I tend to get in trouble when I talk about re-releases and expansions which I think are unwarranted, but I'll go out on a limb here and state that I am less than optimistic about the business prospect for this particular re-release.

It was crap before and it'll still be crap in August. [Big Grin]

Sorry, I couldn't resist. [thumbsup]

Miramax also re-released all three of the Scream movies. I actually remember getting Scream 3 THREE TIMES! First run, re-release, and then it came back for one more week, splitting with something else. PATHETIC!!

Maybe we could all form a secret club to completely destroy crappy movies on their last showing so that there's NO CHANCE of them having any prints for a re-release! [evil] [Mad] [Big Grin]

I can't wait for this re-release!
I missed Michelle Pfeifer in this one in it's original BIG SCREEN run, and no one has run it since.
Also, it will be great to hear Gangster's Paradise through those big cinema speakers!

Oh wait, wrong movie.

Miramax has delayed this re-release to August 15 per the Film Releases website. That will put Confessions of a Dangerous Mind head-to-head with more current Miramax product (Dirty Pretty Things, Buffalo Soldiers, The Magdalene Sisters).

Advice to the Weinstein family: Cancel the re-release and send this picture to video ASAP.

Ad in today's NY Times:

Once in a while audiences overlook even the BEST of movies.

Earlier this year, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" flew below the radar because of other critically acclaimed "Academy" movies despite its prominence in critics year-end "top ten" lists.

Miramax Films invites you to rediscover one of the most critically acclaimed and provocative films in years. Ebert and Roeper declare: It's A brilliant film! Two Thumbs up!

The New York Times says 'Confessions' is Terrifically entertaining! Director George Clooney shows an eye and a head for filmmaking! It's Sharp, funny, irrestistable entertainment says Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly.

This summer, you owe it to yourself to see the film Gene Shalit of the Today Show calls an Unbelievable pleasure! and Peter Travers of Rolling Stone says Sharply comic!

Don't miss it this time!

Exclusive engagement starts Friday
