The Denver Business Journal - 11:27 AM MDT Monday
Dallas company buys share of National CineMedia

Cinemark USA Inc. has joined Regal Entertainment Group and AMC Entertainment as a partner in the National CineMedia LLC movie-theater marketing company of Denver.

Based in the Dallas area, Cinemark had taken a 21 percent stake in CineMedia for undisclosed terms.
CineMedia provides marketing, sales and distribution of movie theater advertising and promotional products as well as business services that use theaters and alternative entertainment across its Digital Content Network (DCN). Such alternative entertainment includes profiles of TV shows, music and films aired between movie showings at theaters.
The marketing company originally was called Regal CineMedia and belonged to the country's largest theater owner, Regal Entertainment. Denver entrepreneur Phil Anschutz created Regal in 2002 from three bankrupt theater chains -- Regal Cinemas of Tennessee, United Artists of Denver and Edwards Theatres of California. Regal Entertainment is based in Knoxville, Tenn., home of its biggest chain, Regal Cinemas.
Regal Entertainment owns and operates more than 550 movie theaters, with 6,270 screens, in the United States.
National CineMedia was spawned in March when AMC Entertainment Inc. of Dallas became a partner in Regal CineMedia. At the time, Regal held 63 percent of National CineMedia, and AMC had the rest.
With Cinemark's involvement in CineMedia, Regal now holds 50 percent interest in the company, and AMC has a 29 percent stake.
CineMedia's in-theater digital distribution network, DCN, will be installed in 180 Cinemark theaters, including 2,300 screens, nationwide starting in January 2006. During the rest of 2005, CineMedia will install its lobby advertisements, business services and non-film content in Cinemark theaters.
When Cinemark theaters are integrated into CineMedia's network, the Denver company will provide its services to 13,000 movie screens nationwide. The company estimates 565 million people will see its offerings each year.
"As one of the top movie [theater] operators in the U.S., Cinemark's [theaters] will further strengthen National CineMedia's advertising network and distribution reach," Kurt Hall, CineMedia's CEO, said in a statement.
Cinemark operates 300 movie theaters with more than 3,200 screens in 33 U.S. states as well as Central and South America.

On a side note, what does this mean for the AMC/Lowes merger? will Loews ultimately sign on to CineMedia since AMC will be the controlling company??
Ironically, the original CineMedia announcement came the same week as the Loews/Screenvision contract extension.
