Every year we do a free-admission showing of a Western movie in conjunction with the "Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match," which is a huge black-powder shooting event that takes place here.

This year our most-requested movie is "McLintock," but our booker tells me it is controlled by the John Wayne Estate and is hard to book without their permission.

Has anyone here ever had any luck booking this title and if so, do you have a contact for me to try? I'd even be OK with booking it now for next year, if it's too late for this year.

Any help would be appreciated.

From the hive mind at Art House Convergence:
quote:
Um actually the Wayne Estate LOST an epic copyright battle on it which included suing the Library of Congress because they "allowed it" to go into the Public Domain

Now the Wayne Estate did strike a deal with Paramount and gave them access to the original materials to they have the " Authorized Authentic " version out on DVD and Blue Ray but I doubt they would take a booking so short version is if you use a lesser copy on DVD ( I only see the Paramount Blu ray) you could show it and not have to pay anyone ( even though it is PD using the Paramount Blu ray would be tricky) and I can tell you from experience you don't want to deal with the Wayne Estate ( though that was a long time ago)

Good luck

The feature is on the Archive dot org site and can be downloaded, but the Paramount logo is removed.
