Now that there is a big discussion about grits on another topic, and a mention of Vegemite in it, I have a question:

What The Hell Is Vegemite?

I looked at the vegemite site, sang the happy vegemite song, and read the history.

Now, what does it taste like?

What does it do?

What will it MAKE me do?

>>What The Hell Is Vegemite?

Its a spreadable (brewers?) yeast extract product.

>>Now, what does it taste like?
Having tried the stuff, it tastes like, well... salty thick brewers' yeast

I'm sure that the Aussies will have better explanations

Okay, I saw the picture of the jar in the other thread, and I have always wondered what it was (ever since the Men At Work song).

Does it bother anyone else that Kraft is evidently mass producing it?

It kinda removes some of the mystery and "Australia-ness" for me! (LOL)

Somebody mail me a jar!

First grits, now Vegemite. We should open up another forum on foods that projectionists eat.

Just don't heat your food inside of a carbon arc lamphouse! Those "rare earth" additives in the carbon cores affect your mind.

Hooray Vegemite!
My favourite thing to put in a sandwich especially with peanut butter. Yummy.
A lot of people put vegemite and cheese together and you can actually buy cheese slices now already coated with it.
It used to be made with the leftover yeast from the beer making process so it HAS to be good for you.
Any true blue aussie will eat vegemite although foreigners dont seem to like it for some reason.
I've actually seen a person mix vegemite with spaghetti.

Well, cheese might make it go down better. Wow, pre-coated? Bet my Kraft rep here in Canada will look at me like I'm a nut when I ask him for that!

But, to my question. What is the origin of this stuff? Why did they start to eat it?
People starving in a time of economic depression? Maybe the brewers weren't allowed to drink water in the Aussie heat and
needed the salt to hydrate? What?

IF a jar of Vegemite was to come my way, Id give it a chance, since I love peanut butter...

That Vegemite song wont leave my head!

Remember! Kraft is a part of Phillip Morris Co... the Cigarette company, and I live in a state where there are alot of tobacco farmers that are going bankrupt. Maybe we should sell the stuff?

Do you get either of those other great Australian food inventions, Lamingtons or Pavlova in the states?

Nope! I guess they aren't as famous. Get someone to write them in to a song!

Geez! We placed the Vegemite order last week!! (LOL)

Still no package! How long does it take?

NCS would have had it to me the next day! *grin* (Hi Mitch!)

Perhaps Paul was wrapping it up to send you and got hungry!

Vegemite is indeed an acquired taste and I have indeed acquired it from childhood as do most good little Aussie kids.

I love the stuff (even though it's owned by a cigarette manufacturer). My Belgian wife Suzanne, however can't stand the sight, smell or taste of it which is just fine with me 'cos that just leaves more for me. Now, if I can just convince the kids that they should really not eat it...

For all the info on Vegemite go to www.vegemite.com.au and you too can be driven mad by the song.

This is not a picture of me.

Russ,

I posted it on Friday, it'll take about a week. Maybe NCS (whoever they are) can come here and get some if that is too long. I'll leave it behind the pot plant on the doorstep. HaHa

Oh, I just love that website. I don't believe it's good for you at all (they remind you too often, just like the ads for those "modern, safe, efficient Bernz-O-Matic in car heaters"), but it's great. Today, I'll be a happy little veg-e-mite and see if I can order a case in celebration of Sydney 2000. What, it doesn't come in aerosol form?
