Caught the 3:30pm show today at the Cineplex Odeus Century Plaza #1 (formerly the Plitt Century Plaza). The 35mm dye-transfer print looked pretty good and sounded great in that room. But...

Cineplex is still battin' zero for me at their SoCal theaters--
haven't seen a great presentation in Century City since the 70mm LOA in 1989. Let's see...

Started 10 minutes late. In the mean time we get to endure the
Cineplex Radio Network playing at 85dB--have to raise your voice
to talk to a seatmate. Fine for the show, annoying as hell for
non-sync.

The entire show ran just slightly out of focus and just slightly
out of frame (splice flashes visible at the bottom on every cut,
along with occasionally visible printer aperture grunge).

But I did get a good laugh at the reversed Cineplex snipe. Yup,
it came up upside down and backwards, tail end first replete with
backward analog sound. Nice touch Cineplex! "Redux" has been
playing here for a week now--can't believe they've run this long
with the print made up like that...

Cheers,

Paul

What did the theatre management say when you brought those problems to their attention?

I've seen many PERFECT presentations at that theatre, but that was years ago.

I saw "Redux" at McClurg Court in Chicago. It opened Friday, I saw the Saturday matinee, and there were already clear signs of abrasion on the print. Wonder how it looks now.

Anyone know how many prints of "Redux" were struck?

John,
Is it playing on the big(used to be much bigger before they got hold of it) screen? And are they still running automated x-over there? Sounds to me like they may have gone platter.

It's in theatre one, the downstairs theatre, which is I believe the biggest one. I've never been in the booth so I don't know what they're running.

Perhaps they switched to platters due to the running length of the movie.

I saw redux at the amc 30 at the block in orange, and I don't think the out of frame was the projectionist fault since my print was out of frame alot at the bottom as well. At first I told them, then I went back in it was fine, then when the reel changed, it went back to being a little out of frame at the bottom, then the next reel it was fine, it switched from in frame to out of frame every reel. It was damn annoying for me as a projectionist, but the movie was great.

For Mark & John,

Redux is playing in theater #1 (the big house). The booth can do changeovers (looks like a pair of JJs, but I've never been in that booth so don't quote me), but most of the time they run on a platter. Redux was plattered.

I have to admit that I didn't mention the problems to any of the staff--the only ones visible being concession and ticket folks. No "management"-looking types around (probably all up in the booths or in the office). The last time I saw a presentation in this house was on the opening night of Eyes Wide Shut and that showing ran very out-of-frame for the entire picture (hard-matte 1.85 showing about a foot of hard matte at the top). The operator tried to frame it but ran out of travel. I did complain that time, but the manager didn't want to stop the show to fix it--he felt the framing was close enough. That attitude (which seems to be a common one at the Socal Cineplex's I've been to) has put me off complaining at Cineplex's in general--nowadays I just try to avoid going to any of them. That, and we were in a rush to get out of the parking structure before their $22.00 parking fee kicked in... (!)

Cheers,

"Ran out of travel?" Couldn't he just turn it the other direction? Unless it makes the lower loop too big or too small, that is...I don't know what's worse, having the sound be 1/24 of a second off or having to see the whole picture out of frame.

I've never used a make of projector that had a full frame of travel in the framing mechanism. They were all *just* short of a frame.

But, jeez, take 20 seconds to stop, open the gate, reframe (centering the knob as you go) and restart. Those who care will appreciate it; tell the ones who complain "we had a power glitch, sorry."

To get back to topic, I have heard many reports (from both coasts) of this print getting trashed. Maybe it's just because this film's audience knows what "film done right" is supposed to look like.

The dye transfer prints shed like no tomorrow and all of that dust and dirt ends up as scratches. That's most probably where the problem is coming from.

Been running the dye-transfer of Apocalypse Now in our booth for a good two months. We started it on our big curved screen and only on reel 3 was it slightly out of frame. You could see that 'white' frame line( I guess Paul Mayer calls it printer aperture grunge) slightly on the bottom of the screen and only on that reel where splice flashes seen on the bottom, whereas they were on top in all the other reels. Brad, as far as shedding, hardly any after two passes with FG.

We've been running Apocolypse Now Redux for 3 weeks and I haven't noticed any reels being slightly off frame. I'm not running the booth but I'm sure the projectionist would have let us know if anything at all seemed wrong with our print.

We've had the film for about 10 days now and will be losing it shortly, but when we received it the print was quite used. Even several thorough tries to clean the monster was in vain. Overall it sounded good and looked presentable...

We're getting Apocolypse Now Redux on Friday. Were you guys able to get it all on one platter? We are also showing RHPS this weekend at midnight (and on 10/31) and I'd hate to have to shuffle the prints around for each show.
