Since the chat room thing has been installed on the FT page I have come back to my computer several times to catch it on line all by itself. I watched it after I logged off and it seems what happens is that when the chatroom notifier updates itself my computer dials up and logs on. Voodoo? It doesn't do it when I leave my browser on another location only FT. Does any one know if there's a setting I can change in Netscape 4.79 that will stop it from logging on without me. Or do I have to leave my browser parked on another page?

Assuming you use Windows, you should be using the Windows dial-up manager and you must have it set to dial automatically when you open netscape. In the dial window that pops up with your name and password there's a check box for "connect automatically" - if you uncheck that it will pop up the window when the chatroom thing tries to refresh - but it won't actually dial untless you click on "ok". You have to catch that window before it finishes dialing to uncheck the box... as far as I can find there isn't any way through control panel to change that setting.
I generaally keep that box unchecked, and many people will suggest you don't save the password either.
If it's set to connect automatically there are several things that could connect anytime - particularly Windows Update - and if you don't have unlimited service that can get nasty!

I checked and I have to press the "Connect" button before it will dial. Which is the way it has been

That is because you are depriving your computer of being online with Film-Tech. It WANTS to be here. You shouldn't deny it. (When the screen does it's refresh once a minute, your connection is just thinking it got broken and quickly dials back up to re-establish itself.)

Next week it will dial up on it's own AND enter the chat room.

It's getting worse. Now when I try to come to FT my computer crashes. It crashed 4 times this morning and had to be revived by Norton's crashguard to get here and post this. Suggestions?

Setting up multiple frames so everyone's browsers are happy isn't too cut and dry. I'll work on it later tonight. Must run.

I vote for clearing out your cache and cookies and visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

If that doesn't work, try uninstalling Dialup Networking, rebooting and reinstalling DUN. Be sure to write down your local access number first.

What operating system and browser versions?

It's better now
I'm using Win 98 and Netscape 4.79. How do you tell what version of 98 you have?

Greg,

To check in Windows just right click on the "My Computer" icon go to properties and then on the General tab under System: it will give you which edition and build version right under the Windows 98 reading.

What was happening was a javascript conflict, I believe. I created a new menu frame with tables. The Film-Tech page would keep reloading and eventually crash. It was totally WC3 compliant so I don't think my code was bad. However I did include a couple of javascripts that are also included on the main page (Don't Right-Click Me, Don't Bookmark Me, etc). Removing the scripts from the menu solves the problem, but unfortunately Brad accidentally re-uploaded the non-tabled version so Opera users and Mac users are getting a pretty ugly version of the site. I hate javascript. Everything should be server side. Too bad I don't know cgi, perl, or any of that junk.

If you turn off javascript (or just "scripting" or "jscript" in IE) you should be fine. IE uses it's own weird version of javascript.

I will look into everything that has been posted on this weekend. If you have something to add that has not been addressed in this thread or the other one (Film-Tech Web Setup), please add it. If you are only having problems that have already been mentioned in these two threads, just be patient please.

Thank you Gordon.

I am closing this thread since it also pertains to another previous discussion to keep things more organized.
