"BAISE MOI" comes out next week in oz. it has been given an R rating which is 18+ , the censors have now decided to review the rating which could result in the film being banned!. I have not seen this film yet, but i have heard that there is actual sex scenes and high level violence in the film. it's french canadian i believe.
I have noticed that the promoters of the film are now focusing on the contoversy as a way of promoting the film i.e. "see it before it's banned!".
I was wondering if any other countries have had problems with this film, either being banned, censored or promoted in similiar ways ?.
We had a similiar problem with "sick - the bob flannagan story" ,it was initially banned but we convinced the censors to come to our cinema to review the decision, word was conveniently leaked and we had all the tv crews banging on our doors wanting the story. They finally gave it an R rating and with all the publicity it ended up being quite popular!.

Baise Moi is one of those phrases in a foreign language that doesn't translate very well. I thought it said Kiss Me or Fuck me but I was informed that in this case it means Rape Me.

Ky heard it was graphic. Also it didn't make much money in San Francisco so we decided not to book it here at the Rialto. Much as we try, we can't play everything. I'm sure that the reason that Ky didn't book it had more to do with it's poor box office performance that his nervousness over any graphic content. I am beginning to suspect that he actually likes porn.

I read recently that FUCK ME is a more accurate translation, but that there was no way theatres would display that on posters, so they used RAPE ME as a less accurate translation (although the first sex scene IS a VERY graphic, hardcore rape scene.) Most (not all) of the sex scenes are full hardcore (without the "climactic" shots). It's definitely a curiosity item only. I can see it as a possible midnight show (although the Laemmle in Santa Monica where I saw it was showing it as part of their morning film series). As far as i know, there has been no problem with showing the film in the states.

A couple of months ago, my neighbor had rented this film, having seen it while working abroad, and he insisted that my roommate and I watch it before he had to return the tape.

I didn't see the whole thing, but caught at least the last half of it.
I'll give it two words: DAMN VIOLENT

He is something interesting. The other day i was watching Amelie.

If you remember near the start of the film there is a scene in which Young Amelie is gaining revenge on her neighbour (the guy who told her that her instamatic camera was causing accidents.) She sits on his roof and keeps unplugging his TV ariel while he is watching some football. As the TV image keeps dissapearing he is jumping about, hitting his TV and shouting. Now early on, i think i heard him shout,"Baise moi". Could this be. It would make sense if he was shouting "F*ck me". I still have the film build, so i may check again tomorrow.

Yea, but they usually don't translate mutterings, or swearwords. One usually gets the gist of it by the emotion behind the utterance.

Merd!

Now there's a chance it may be banned here, business is booming! It's on three screens and a $35,000 average!

Some of my friends have been to see it and all have said that it's crap!!.
i'm kind of hoping that they will ban it, it's all people talk about at the moment, i just feel that there are much more deserving films to see and discuss than a D grade action porno!!.
phew, i'm glad i got that out of my system!

This has been banned at the current Film Festival in Wellington and there are 2 others currently showing that will be on the chopping block soon.
