I have these two old laptops (DEC HiNote VP) that are perfect for hauling around. Problem is, the batteries have long stopped holding a charge.

Is there a place that could do something like chop open the battery case and change the cells inside? I know the batteries are not made anymore. They only seem to last a few years, so even if I found a new one in a box (on ebay or someplace) it wouldn't be any better.

Somewhere I remember seeing a laptop battery that was about the size of two mouse pads side by side. The idea was it sat underneath your laptop and had a converter to plug into the normal DC in (from the AC adaptor). It was very thin and boasted a very long burn time. Might want to do a Google search and see if you can find it.

Hmm, if you know the power requirements of the notebook, maybe you could kluge together some kind of outboard battery pack using current-technology batteries. Might not be worth the trouble though, hard to say... Also the notebook electronics might not work well with a different type of battery than it was originally designed for (like nicad vs. nimh -- charging and discharge characteristics of a different type of battery might be a problem). Aren't there portable rechargeable sources of low-wattage AC power? You could plug the notebook's AC adapter into that power source.

A good alternative solution is the Car power adapter for laptops. Just rig it up to a 12v battery (or use one of the specially built (for campers?) portbale battery thingies).

Please visit www.tigerdirect.com

I believe they have the battery that sits underneath. Regardless, they have laptops for about three hundred bucks - the best prices out there.

They are based in Miami, Florida.
