I'm trying to find out the name of a movie for someone. She has no idea who the actors are, who directed it, or any other factors that would make it easier to identify. Just the basic plot. The story centers around a family of three. A teenage girl and her parents, both of whom are deaf. The daughter, who acts as their translator to others who can't sign, becomes involved with a young man. Because most of her time is going to her new beau, the parents have to cope with the inevitable fact they are going to have to let go of their daughter some day, but more importantly, must learn to communcate to others without her.

I've never seen the film, and I honestly don't know if it was released in theatres or if it's actually a made for T.V. movie, but it was released sometime in the 90's. Possibly mid to late. What's neat about this film is that a majority of the dialogue in it is sign with subtitles. I'm at a loss. So I'm turning to my fellow film buffs. Any help you could give I would really appreciate. Thanks.

That picture is called Beyond Silence (as per the link supplied by James). It received a 1997 Oscar nomination for foreign-language feature and got a US arthouse release via Miramax in June 1998.

Because of the movie's storyline, all the US print ads for Beyond Silence included an advisory: "This film includes subtitles and is fully accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing."

Thanks guys! She didn't mention anything about it being a German film but this just has to be it. I vaguely remember now something about the girl wanting to play an instrument. Sounds interesting though. I'll have to check it out. I really appreciate the info.

I just found out the name of the movie was Love Is Never Silent. It was a made for T.V. movie with Mare Winningham, Cloris Leachman, and Sid Caesar. I got some plot elements wrong, and I was way off on the release date. It aired back in 1985.
